Need inputs from a more mature crowd than the sportbike forums I visit.
I have a 04 Honda CBR with about 2000 miles on it. I bought it in Mass and then moved out here for a military reassignment. Since I am military I registered the bike legally because normally Ca has a law that out of state used vehicles must have at least 7500 miles on it before it can be registered in Ca.
The CBR is still titled in Mass and now I need to sell the CBR for financial reasons.
If I sell it, will Ca still hold the new buyer to the 7500 rule even though it is already registered out here? If they do, there is no way I can sell it here then unless it goes to a dealer.
I think I am hosed. ANy ideas????????

Here's the deal: if you can get a valid CA registration on the bike by being in the military, do it. If you sell it with a Mass registration, it must meet the 7500 mile requirement UNLESS the bike is manufactured 50 state legal. To compare, all ST1300's are 50 state bikes. Your CBR may or may not be.
You can do two things: 1) Call American Honda and ask them, or 2) find the emissions sticker on the bike. It will either say the bike is built to federal requirements (in which case it's not 50 state legal), or it will say it meets CA requirements, in which case it is 50 state legal and you're okay.
The sticker will tell you if it's built to CA standards and will answer your question.
Good luck.

It is not 50 state legal according to the dealer and he showed me the sticker. It is however legally registered in Ca.
Do you think I can sell it in Ca?

Your original post says it's titled in Mass, so I have no idea.
If the bike is currently registered in CA, then you have no issue. If it's not, then you MAY have an issue, depending on what he military status means to the dmv. Check the DMV website, it's actually pretty clear on the subject. I was surprised.

If you have already obtained legal registration in California, I think you are over the hump. Reregistering should not be a problem.

Thanks for the input folks. I'll check the website.
The guy at AAA said it would not be a problem either but they are more lenient that the real DMV I think and the buyer not be a AA member.

Once it's here it's here, AAA or the DMV. They will collect sales tax on it from the buyer though.

I bought my STeed in Texas though I live in San Diego. (Saved almost $2000)
After 7500+, I simply went to the DMV, paid the difference between Texas and California sales tax plus a few other fees...less than $50 and was done.....except California wanted the engine number. It's on the right side way down deep under the cylinder head. A little fairing flexing helps. I had the DMV lady down on her knees....don't go there...to verify the number.
San Diego is very military friendly, but like the other man said, you do have to pay the taxes.

You could have registered your Texas ST in CA with 2 miles on it. It's a 50 state bike. It's legal in CA from Honda. Check the sticker under your seat.
