If it is the one I am thinking about.
You download the programme, and it will automatically update your Garmin Unit software.
It is not a big deal so dont worry to much about it!

I used it a couple weeks ago to update my 2610. Went pretty smooth AFTER I got the program downloaded/inSTalled.
BTW, maybe it's been poSTed, but the 7.0 MapSource update is now juST $50!!! (too bad it was announced 8 days AFTER I got mine for $75)

This was announced in an actual Garmin email - but I juST looked on their website and they STill show $75, which is what I paid. If you are intereSTed, I would suggeST you contact them to verify what their current price is.

Did you connect the 2610 to the PC w/ the same cable used to download maps?

Yes - although this time (for a change), I downloaded my maps to the CF card using a card reader. STill takes a long time when doing the entire US.

I heard the same thing over on the ST mail server. I have not made any attempt to compare old to new.

The updater is excellent...plug the GPS in, run the updater, and forget.
Easy!

I had a little problem with it I'll share in case anyone else runs into it.
I d/l'ed the updater and ran it. It couldn't/wouldn't find the 2610 even though the 2610 has been connected before and has had maps d/l'ed before. When I set it to search for the device, the updater said it found several devices but none with the right properties.
I turned off the GPS, plugged it back into the USB port, and let the computer "find" it again (running XP Pro) but it said it needed the Garmin driver and couldn't find it. I did a search on the drives for the file and found it, told the computer to find it (which it did), and reran the updater. Same results as before.
The only thing I was doing different from when I was loading maps into the GPS was that, originally, I was using a front panel USB slot and this time I had used a rear panel USB slot. I remembered that the front USB was USB 1.0 and the rear was USB 2.0 so I transferred the USB from the rear slot to the front and everything worked as advertised.
I don't know why but, then, I'm no expert on computers. I thought the GPS would work with USB 2.0 but that appears to not be the case.
