I spent 3 tours in Vietnam, 1 year in Germany and 5 years in the Philippines. Retired out of SD, too cold to live their, didn't know where to live so sold everything and bought an RV and traveled for 12 years. Yes I hauled my bike and rode wherever we stayed. After reading Mellows post about Rob and Tricky Micky's post about some of you guys it got me wondering what the heck everyone on this board does for a living. i know we get a good idea from some of the posts like nurse bob, st pilot, island cop etc. but the profiles leave a little to be desired and i also know people want to keep it that way and thats ok. but i want to know more so ill start off. i sell CONCRETE yep pretty exciting eh! i dont know much about my ST except for what i have learned from you guys but im pretty good with concrete so if anyone needs info on concrete or has a question just let me know and ill try and help out. :04biker:

...my job.

I've had enough at work - all the office politics, and the powers-that-be putting people in charge who are not fit to run a bath. What's happened is that in August last year the company for which I work brought in some "advisers" from a company called KPMG, which has resulted in quite a few people getting fired.

Even though I'm a contractor and not permanent staff, last October I was promoted to manager of my team in the IT department, so I asked for a rate increase (I last had one in 2003). I was fobbed off for ages until I was finally told a decision would be made on the 11th January.

11th January: the answer was no, so I handed in my notice. My last day is the 8th February and I'm really looking forward to it. (I've worked there for 7 years).

I'm going to do my own thing for a while to see if I can make enough to live on, if so, fine; if not then I'll look for another IT job.

So hopefully I'll have a bit more time to ride the ST for fun instead of just commuting! The only down side is that I was hoping to get another 50,000 mile award soon, now it looks like that will be delayed a while!

Oh - and as luck would have it Mrs Seriesowner was made redundant on the 11th January as well! She already has a couple of interviews lined up though.

Looks like being an interesting year...

I have just read this whole thread, do I get an award? What a crowd! This is a great slice of humanity.

I have been:

* painter
* housemover
* swamper (don't ask, although I think a couple of you phone field guys may know)
* laborer of various types
* YMCA guide
* carpenter, union and other
* contractor
* father (yes, it is work)
* 16 years as an architect, which I truly love. They pay me to do this! I get to draw museums, libraries, mixed use developments, schools, manufacturing facilities. Then I get to make sure they are built the way they are drawn. Yes, the firm I work for does a variety of work, and my odd an varied background has helped me. It wasn't an easy path to get here, but it was worth it. Made VP last Friday.

Odd story ahead:

Last fall, a park ranger at Zion National Park pulled up to my buddy and I while we're unloading the bikes and said, "Let me guess what you guys do for a living. You (my pal) are in law enforcement. You (me) are a dentist." He was right about my riding partner, he has the look, with 30 years in. I just want to know 1) what does a dentist look like, and 2) is that me? I've been wondering on that one for the last 4 months. Just seems so far from my own perspective of myself, and no offense to any dentists.

First and foremost a photographer, but also a 3D designer/animator, graphic designer, videographer/producer, jack-of-all-trades. Currently working for a division of a little company by the name of Corning. Previous job was the same only for Fountain Powerboats. Fast machines...I've taken pics at 111 mph of the GPS Speedo with the driver in frame to show it was real, done 60 mph over 3 to 5 footers 30 miles out off of Savannah, GA, and flew 4 ft off the deck at 80+ mph hanging out of helicopters on several occasions. Loved it, and would be awesome to do again.

I work at NASA for the Constellation Program (bringing all the spacecraft pieces together to fly missions to the international space station, the Moon, and Mars).

It took me awhile to read the thread, but I tried to capture the categories that contains most of the group. Seems like we could start our own ST state or country.

The two main categories were IT and Military. If you speak in acronyms (IT or military) you'll probably be able to hold a conversation pretty well with any other ST member.

Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers seemed to have a pretty good representation. The selling point on the ST must have been the tip-over WINGS that grabbed their attention.

Heavy Equipment, Mechanical Engineers, Electricians (phone, A/C, wiring), Communications, Blacksmith/Welding/Metal working, and Carpentry covered a fair amount the ST group. If we need something built, these guys can frame it, build it, fab it, and fill it.

Police, Fire, and Medical (doctors, drugs, and dentists) covered another fair representation. If you do something wrong, not only is there a good chance that you'll get a ticket, but if you get hurt, you have pretty good odds that you'll be patched up and ready to ride in no time.

Photography showed to be well represented. But if any of you are taking pictures of each other bending over a saddle and looking coy at these RTE's then perhaps I just don't understand your art, so be kind and don't do it. :)

Teachers weren't in short supply either. Not only do we have a lot to learn from our ST brethren, they'll end up grading you at the end of the conversation....so pay attention!

Concrete, geology and mining were in the mix (har har har). If we got these guys together with the afore mentioned engineers it could be dangerous. Keep this in mind at your STOC events and place the other professions between them.

There are a lot of Retired people out there in the crowd, so don't get them started up on war stories or the early days of IT when finding bugs in the computer was literally "finding bugs IN the computer". Lots of those computers were related to the military, so odds are that this conversation will happen frequently. The good news is that being old they'll forget what they were talking about and you can change the subject to what roads you should be riding on.

Represented below is the other professions that appeared, some more than others.

Chemicals
Insurance
Banking
Real Estate
Professional Fight instructors (there were enough that I'm pretty sure if we got into a bar brawl with other bikers that we'd win)
SCUBA (this also seemed to have more than I'd expected. I guess Nitrogen Narcosis is kinda like going 130+ mph on the ST...the world starts to get a bit warped)
Space Flight
Judicial (Judge, Lawyers, stenographers)
Sales
Veterinarians

I work at NASA for the Constellation Program (bringing all the spacecraft pieces together to fly missions to the international space station, the Moon, and Mars).

It took me awhile to read the thread, but I tried to capture the categories that contains most of the group. Seems like we could start our own ST state or country. . . .

Can't wait to meet some of you all out there next week!

Friendswood, TX, huh? What wth your work, I'd say you're counting on making friends out there in the ST universe.

Yeah, I've just started working with the Altair team (Lunar Lander) as one of the many groups I'm trying to integrate. I'll be trying to convince them that they need to have an ST rather than the new Lunar Rover. We might need some different tires because the roads on the moon don't look to promising at the moment.

Although another division I have talked to are discussing options of creating solar arrays by baking the regolith (moon soil) with an automated rover that is essentially an oven. As it turns out the soil on the moon has nearly all the right ingredients for making solar panels (low quality), with just the slightest pinch of elements brought from Earth. So maybe once the soil is baked into a long series of solar arrays we can ride our ST's on those. Mmmmmm baked regolith.

Every time someone asks that question I cringe 'cause I'll say I'm an analyzer tech and they'll say "huh?" I don't know if there's a short version to this or not.

I work in the RnD dept of a really huge chemical producer. I'm helping develop and apply the next generation of laser-based sensors. Overall, if it's a machine that pulls apart molecules for measurement, I've probably worked on it or one of it's cousins.

I've heard that analyzer techs make good boat motor mechanics... wonder if that applies to motorcycles... we'll find out soon! :tools1:

When folks ask me what I do, I tell them I ride motorcycles but to make money, I work as a real estate attorney. I also tell them my goal is to become a professional motorcyclist - not a racer, just a professional rider. Still trying to figure out how to make that happen.

I am scheduled to take the MSF Rider Coach training here in SC in August. When/If I start teaching the classes, will that qualify me as a professional motorcyclist?
