After reading Mellows post about Rob and Tricky Micky's post about some of you guys it got me wondering what the heck everyone on this board does for a living. i know we get a good idea from some of the posts like nurse bob, st pilot, island cop etc. but the profiles leave a little to be desired and i also know people want to keep it that way and thats ok. but i want to know more so ill start off. i sell CONCRETE yep pretty exciting eh! i dont know much about my ST except for what i have learned from you guys but im pretty good with concrete so if anyone needs info on concrete or has a question just let me know and ill try and help out. :04biker:

I spent 30 years as a lineman for Pacific Telephone/Pacific Bell. That gig included a lot of different tasks and I learned a lot.
My health went in the toilet so I retired in '94.
I got better and returned to the work force and in '99 I was asked to return as a contractor providing training mostly and some inspection work. I worked 'til late '01 and was layed off. I got called back in Sept '05, which leads me to what I do now:

I am involved in utility pole replacement
representing SBC Communications. The owner of the pole (usually the local power co.) will replace the pole for many reasons mostly due to old age/decay
I insure that everything involved in the process is in the best interest of SBC (now ATT). I do this by acquiring the paperwork, going to the pole and comparing what's written to what's actual and changing or approving what's proposed.
Also I write up a plan of action for ATT as to
what they need to do to get the replacement complete, maintain service quality and comply with laws and regs. Sometimes there will be just a simple transfer of the equipment that's on the pole..Sometimes new stuff or different stuff is needed. The old pole must be removed of course. Each pole has the pole tag numbers verified (where possible) and every pole is given a GPS coordinate for ease of location by the construction crews, especially important in rural areas with few cross streets for reference.

My area is quite large and covers 2 counties, Ventura and Los Angeles.
I cover Palmdale to the north, Ventura/Ojai to the north west and the San Fernando Valley and even Agoura and Calabasas.
A typical day would have me in Palmdale in the morning and Piru and Fillmore later that day. The next day may find me in Ventura and then Ojai and surrounding area. 200 plus miles per day is not uncommon.
9/15/06 My inspector gig slowed so now I am teaching pole climbing and more....

Real retirement :mcrider: will commence when this gig poops out.

I work/help run (probably more work) at the family's campground. My parents and grandparents bought the place back in 1984 and I was part-time for many years till 1996. Then I came in full time and now my brother and I are in the process of taking over. During my part time years I was a Vending Machine Repairman. What fun. It gave me many different skills though, because in vending you'll find all the basics. Electrics, electronics, plumbing, refrigeration, and good ol' fashion mechanical stuff. For many years I was a construction electrician working for other contractors. Later I added to that and started doing air condition/refrigeration work on my own. Short story ... I'm an entrepreneur ... which is likely synonymous with unemployable

Long version:
Publishing was my 1st business -
Weekly & Monthly ad mags that you likely know well - Auto Trader/Truck Trader/RV Trader/Old Car Trader/Real Estate Trader etc etc
Along with a buddy we started/owned/operated papers in Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon & Portland Oregon - ~125 employees. This was 1978 to 1990.

Somewhat concurrently with the Trader paper business we also owned and operated a web offset printing plant. (1986 - 1990) 3 shifts / 6 days 40 employees.

Bought out 1990 :hotpepper

A Technical Training and Consulting business was my next step. I owned the SW Ontraio franchise rights for Productivity Point International - Tech training solutions for the corp world - 4 offices in SW Ont. 50 employees

Bought out in 1999 :hotpepper

Now its Real Estate - I buy, sell, property manage & develop small properties, mostly residential – I’m a 1-man-band utilizing independent contractors. Fun! - but I think I made more money pinching pennies and browbeating lowly employees - I mean to say - working with valued associates to create a cohesive team of like minded professionals dedicated to meeting the needs of our business partners. ;)

My son is studying Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station. I am curious if those of you who work as Civil engineers like what you do? Has it been rewarding? Stimulating?..Ever had problem finding employment?

I've done varied things, but all have been related to my education, which is in computer science.

The highlight of my career so far has been being the chief architect and lead developer of a very large network management system deployed at a very large ISP that's been gobbled up by four very large telecom companies in the last nine years. I've also spent some time in charge of software development at a dot com and built part of the network that gets travellers on Air Force One and Two access to the Internet. These days I'm a software and hardware toolmonger and occasional project manager on a small system that does some very neat things with radio waves.

I figure I have maybe another decade or so in this business, after which I'm going to find some other way to keep a roof over my head.

I'm the guy all companies would love to get rid of, but, they can't...I do the cost estimates for a larger aerospace manufacturer. I cost a good deal of money and I don't produce a damn thing.

We make;
1) All the rotor blades for the Apachie helicopter.
2) All the fusalage skins for the C-17.
3) Leading Edge and Fusalage skins for Airbus, Boeing, Eclipse and a few other assorted other aircraft.
3) Some of the exhaust ducts for the JSF.
4) Abrasion Strips for most of the helicopter blades in the free world.
5) The Dome and frames for the Shuttle main tank.

It used to be a real *****en job, we would see some of the strangest you would ever imagine. But, business being business, has decided to go the core competency route...boring.

I sold construction equipment for many years ,mostly large hydraulic cranes and rubber tire mobile gantrys (Travelift) for Drott and Pettibone. Ended up with a mom&pop equipment rental business in SoCal during the booming Regan years. Rented reach type 4x4 fork lifts to custom home builders.

When the bubble burst in 1990 we retired to our lake front home in the Norther Sierra's. Life is good.

Started in the Navy as a Corpsman; degree in Economics so naturally I got into software... device level routines for encryption and communications.
Then more communication programming before the sales guys got me in front of customers then 15 years doing technical sales of VME and CompactPCI hardware and software.
Now I'm loafing most of the time; but, just picked up a consulting job advising a software house on cPCI blades and chassis, it might turn fulltime as they need someone to put in front of customers. And you know software geeks should *NOT* be put in front of customers! :D

Few years as an aircraft mechanic in the service, decided it would be more fun to fly then fix. While waiting for a flight school to open for the day at the local airport I met a group going out to sky-dive. That sounded like way more fun so I talked my way in with them and tried that instead (a killer story). Tried it that morning and decided that jumping was a trip and would be my new profession, until I found out that the GI bill wouldn't pay for anything related to becoming a world class jumper. O'well, they would pay to go to college, so five years later and no more GI Bill left, I was forced to graduate and take a job with either Huges Space Satellite or Cal Edison, but on the way to that it turned out that I had watched to many Magnum PI episodes and decided to "move the family" to Maui instead. So I became a journeyman lineman for the local utility, got my MBA and leverage it into a few promotions (each a pay cut...what was I thinking?). Anyway, I ended up with a title and fewer dollars, man did they have my number. So now I run the construction devision of the local electrical utility. The plus side is that one of my direct reports is the vehicles and the warehouse supervisor, so my 06 ST gets it's very own parking space next to all the line trucks and bucket trucks. Unfortunantly, with the price of fuel ( over $3) I take my company SUV most of the time (free, free, free). It's a trip the way all of the small choices we make end up for a large part defining who we are.

I'm a professional musican, playing in the Dallas Opera orchestra since 1978. I do a lot of free lance work in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area year round.
Second, I own a SCUBA business dedicated to education and travel. My company runs about 30 supervised group trips each year to great dive destinations all over the world. I am gone "diving" some years as many as 16 weeks a year. I also book between 500-600 unsupervised divers into mostly the Caribbean each year.
The two "seasons" work well and I have a couple of people that work for me in the SCUBA business so if I need to stay home and play clarinet I let them run the trips or teach the classes.

I've been working in and around the public sector for close to 40 years. Retired from the City of Seattle where my last post was their Deputy CTO. Before that, IT Director at Seattle City Light. Before that, a bunch of interesting jobs that allowed me to reinvent myself every 6-8 years.

Was a consultant in Gartner's public sector for a couple of years before one of my clients hired me away. Now I'm doing a stint in our county's emergency management operation which is incredibly fascinating.

Maggie is another long term public sector employee having spent close to 35 years working in the parks and recreation profession.

One of these days, we'll retire. Pretty much.

have been a salesman for 3 LTL trucking companies in 18 years and have worked the last 11 for Wilson Trucking Corp. I build relationships for Wilson with firms that use trucking in their business operations. LTL means less than truckload. Most days it is the best job in the company and some days it is the worst but the latter days are few and far between. I moonlight as a sales associate at West Marine to pay for my habits of sailboats and motorcycles. West is a retail chain of marine supply stores.

IT guy here....NOT!:D

Actually I'm a test engineer for Bose corporation. http://www.bose.com I build test hardware and develop software to test Bose products. Formerly for the Automotive division, but now for the Home Entertainment side of things.

Started as a Fire Control Technician (B) in the Navy, then was a maintenance, electronics technician and later Electronic Engineer at Digital Equipment Corp, before being laid off in the early 90's. I got a "temp" job at Bose a little later, and except for 11 months at another company, the rest is history.

As little as possible. Ok, I'm a Network Engineer for the Global Service Technologies group of GE Healthcare, or whatever their calling it this month. ;)

Curt

I know what you mean. I work for GE Aviation, or is it Infrastructure-Aviation, or is it Transportation, or is it Aircraft Engines. I just can't keep up.

At any rate, I design compressor blades for jet engines. It's a fun job. I've worked on powerplants for the F14, F16 (newer block), F15 (though, the US is still using the Pratt-powered version), F18 (both the "baby" and super hornets), B1B, B2, F117, C5 and a whole slew of commercial aircraft (747, for example). Some of my more recent work has been with marine and industrial engines that are used for things like oil platform power generation, powerplant booster stations and peek power delivery, natural gas pipeline pressurization, oil pipeline pumping, naval vessels, fast ferries, cruise liners, etc. Like I said, it's a fun job.

Note for Burger: Was previously in Wiltshire Police doing the same up until 2 years ago, did Bikesafe a lot....had a good laugh at your desrciption of some of my former colleagues being in the "Queens Escort"! I must mention that to them when I see some of them next-more like, they are a load of "Queens"! (Not talking the mick out of you though Burger-the technical description for them would be that they were what are called in Wiltshire "VIP-trained motorcyclists". All traffic motorcyclists in Wiltshire are Advanced motorcyclists, its just the VIP guys do an extra course....)

Glad you enjoyed the Bikesafe anyway!!

I manage the Customer service, design, prepress/elec imaging, and digital press teams in a mid-sized commercial printing operation. I also do some freelance photo & design work in my areas of personal interest - riding & flyfishing.

I did my under grad at RIT in fine art and commercial photo, stayed and did my grad work in printing sciences and management. While in Rochester, I did a great deal of R&D in digital photo, long before it became a consumer market, and finally made the complete jump to digital myself last year trading a nice Hasselblad Kit for some high end Canon dig SLR gear.

It's been a long strange trip... looking to get the hell out and do something more with the creative skill set, just can't afford the $$$ hit at the moment.

After 9 years in the Navy I went to a major company as a service tech. for office machines...copiers, microfilm, fax (I remember when they weighed 600 pounds and was as big as a washing machine). My division got sold. Year later got back into copier and fax sales. The company got sold. Worked for an IT department in a bank. Bank got sold.
Got fed up with being sold so I went home and started making websites (mostly hotels around the country), that was 8 years ago. Wife also works at home doing pre-press work for several printing companies.

Now we are in the process of setting up another manufacturing facility in Houston Area. Much of what we do is related to the oil patch industry so it makes sense to have a facility in that area. I ride about 4 months of the year, then go back to retirement. Heh, I live to ride, grass or pavement. Beats 31 years working in an automotive factory!

Hmm...missed this one first time around.

30 years in education. Taught Jr. High Science and then went to the high school as a dean and then asistant principal. In addition to the usual "principal" stuff I also manage the building tech and administrative applications. I would love to have some of you IT people on speed dial...:bow1:

Worked as a structural assembler for McDonnell Douglas here in SoCal for 14 years (MD-80,MD-11,C-17,Delta II & III rocket, and Titan IV rocket) untill Boeing (the EVIL EMPIRE) bought us out and layed everyone off. Then worked as a repair tech. doing service mods on Twin Otters at a small FAA repair station. Now (2 1/2 yrs.) Im a fabricator/assembler for a division of L-3 that developes, builds and tests prototype missles for the military.

I used to write web-applications. Wrote Sprintpcs.com. Now I manage web applications - in charge of all consumer shopping and business and goverment webpages at Sprint. Never do your job too well, or you get kicked up into management.

Speaking of concrete: ACI Level One Certified Tester! Best job I ever had; just didn't pay worth a damn.

Spent 6 yrs in the AF, 3 of which (87-90) was maintaining the recon systems on the U-2 (TR-1) in the UK keeping the hated commies under surviellance. For the last 13 1/2 years I have been working for the FAA as an Airway Transportation Systems Specialist. I maintain everything from the Instrument Landing Systems, Air Traffic Control Tower communications, Landbased air navigation systems (VOR, TACAN, DME, NDB, etc...), terminal Radar, Radar displays, Digital voice recorders, blah, blah, blah. Our Academy is located in Oklahoma City and needless to say I have spent close to three years TDY there sitting in an equipment school of some type or another.

For a part time hobby, I spend a weekend a month serving with my brethren in th Air National Guard doing the same thing on base as I do at work.

Just a side note, are any of you pilots going to be at OSH this year for the airshow? Drop me a note if you are, I would love to meet you. I am in charge of our watchstanding crew during the airshow so I know that I'll be around there everyday.

Good thread for a relaxed morning read over a few cups of coffee. No wonder this site is so active and addictive - a lot of experience and knowledge lurking out there.

My short story: Manager of Food and Accommodation Services with an international company, Sodexho, until June 2, when I will retire. Picking up my new '05 ST1300A June 3 :mcrider: - lots of touring in the retirement plan, of course.

My longer story: When I was 16 I had a summer job cooking at a resort hotel and the Chef used to say he'd "Seen more meals than you can shake a stick at". I figured he just got too much flour up his nose...affecting synaptic connections or something. The $$ made that summer went into my first bike, a Honda 450, and I've had Hondas ever since. Honeymoon in '75 (still married as of today...) was 2 month trip across Canada on my 1969 CB750 (the Honda classic that set a new standard for bikes- wish I still had it) to start graduate work in Human Nutrition.
So after the past 25+ years managing food and other services for the oil industry on offshore production facilities, large construction camps (e.g. 3500 in camp), health care, corporate, education, vending, etc., with millions of meals served, quess I've also earned the right to say that "I've seen more meals than you can shake a stick at".

Looking forward to retirement from the daily corporate stuff but will continue with some consulting work for the services industry.

Also hoping to meet some of you on the road and seeing more miles and having more :) on my ST than you can shake a stick at.

I am a retired millwright. Now how many will say what the heck is a millwright, Retired Autoworker then.

From Wikipedia:

A millwright today is someone who maintains or constructs industrial machinery such as that which would be related to assembly lines, also pumps, valves, printing presses, etc. Millwrights are usually responsible for the unassembled equipment when it arrives at the job site. Using hoisting and moving equipment they position the pieces that need to be assembled. Their job requires a thorough knowledge of the load bearing capabilities of the equipment they use as well as an understanding of blueprints and technical instructions.

Most millwrights are educated through apprenticeship programs where they receive a combination of classroom education along with a good deal of on the job training. Most programs last about 4 years. The apprenticeships usually pay a small stipend that increases with experience.

A high percentage of Millwrights join unions to help protect their interests and those with a high level of skill often start their own businesses as independent contractors.

Would love to retire, but the medical insurance would cause severe injury to my wallet!
