I am starting to plan my routing to Golden from Socal. From what I see, its superslab almost all the way., i.e, 15 to 40. Suggestions and advice welcomed. Also, feel free to post your routing from anywhere in N. America.

Louie if you are going to slab it, take I-15 North and catch I-70..
that is a bit more scenic than 40 to 25.... When are you
planning to arrive in Golden??

How much time do you have. Three days? Take this route. Get to Vegas any way you want than I-15 to Cedar City Utah. Hang a right onto 14 go 18 miles to 148 take 148 till you get to 12 than to 24 than to 95 to 191 take your pick to Durango Colorado. From Durango take 550 north thru Ouray to Montrose. Take 50 east to Salida than take 285 to70 to Golden. Three good days and much nicer than the Slab. Trust me I have done it a number of times.

I'm planning on visiting Nieces in Grand Junction and Aurora. But I haven't really decided whether to take my extra time on the way there or the way back. I was thing two weeks.

Maybe I should make it three weeks! :D

Anybody who is privileged to live amid such natural beauty, Rod, should be humble and not rub it in on the rest of us poor slobs.

I'm not - would MUCH rather on any of my previous WeSTOC's. But - I am not complaining of the beauty!!!! Matter of fact, Nancy and I enjoyed a great "top-down" 150 mile drive through the mountains today. In the next-beST thing to a ST................ Our S2K.

Isn't there a rule in the STOC charter that if any sanctioned event is held within the boundaries on the state in which you reside you must, at registration, show a fuel receipt from an neighboring state or 250 miles whichever is further.

Paul

I can do that!!!! :D

We call 285 'The Gunbarrel' because it is so straight and it is not much to write home about unless you want to make time. It starts somewhere south of Pecos, TX and comes up through Carlsbad, Roswell, and Santa Fe, NM, on to Alamosa, MonteVista, and Poncha Springs (where we often ride for good pie) CO. To get to Durango via Wolf Creek you have to be on 160 west of Poncha Springs (where there's great pie).

For those interested, there's some great riding in northern New Mexico and we'll be glad to route you through some of it. Just PM us so we don't clog up the threads.

If Southern Colorado is something you are interested in travelling, 550 north is a definite (the Million Dollar Highway). At Montrose, take 50 east over Monarch Pass (boy do we have stories about Monarch Pass!!) Stop in Poncha Springs for homemade pie (they have great pie there---4" high!) then north on 285 (a short distance) to join 24. Continue north to Leadville and take either 24 or 91 to join I70. Don't belittle I70 thru that stretch. If you like, ride over Loveland Pass. Take a break and stop and ride the train from Georgetown to Silver Plume (the mine tour is most excellent and wrth the price, if it is still going). Tommyknocker beer (especially the Maple Nut Brown Ale) out of Idaho Springs is most excellent, so pick some up for later, then head on into Golden.

From Grand Junction, east on I70 a few miles to 65. Take 65 to 92 and go east over McClure Pass (boy do we have some stories about McClure Pass!!). Just after Carbondale, go east on 82 through Aspen, then over Independence Pass (boy do we have some stories about Independence Pass!!!) Then north on 24 to Leadville, etc. Of course you could swing south to Poncha for pie. We have travelled close to 150-200 miles out of our way on our Colorado tours to get to Poncha for pie.

And then there is US 40, which samples the northeast corner of Utah and the northern strip of Colorado. After a few mountain passes, US 40 joins I70 between Silver Plume (another fine microbrewery) and Idaho Springs (don't forget to pick up Tommyknocker Maple Nut Brown Ale for later).

Of course, there are other options. We tour these areas just about every year, so if you have questions, holler.

We can also give advice on night stops if you need them. We're pretty familiar with the 'bang for the buck' establishments (and high-end/low-end for that metter).

We are in NM. And we play in northern NM and CO quite a bit.

Speaking of "low-end", when are you coming up? If you want to come up a day or two early, you are more than welcome to STay at our place. I'm sure we will have room for SuperBat and "whatever his name" that STeve will be riding. :D

'The Velvet Ant' That's the 929s name. Its actually a red and black wasp-like creature that makes a high-pitch buzzing noise and gets away quickly when bothered. The ant, that is...well, and the The Ant.

Cool. We may take you up on that. We talked about asking you over the weekend, but ended up trying to get things done so we could ride. Also, we also may have some door prize material. I'll email you and Whit about it later, when I'm home.

What we bring depends largely on my knee. :hurt1: I may be arrivng in the 350Z :drive1:(that just got new shoes courtesy of Nissan :headbang: ) and Steve on the SuperbaT. We'll arrange the ST sharing when we get there. :chatter: :Chair1:
