OK when can I kick the engineer/designer who designed the oil filter location? I've got it unscrewed and it's now stuck in exhaust, frame, stand hell with the wrench cap on it. Can I get the little bugger out of there. NO!
So I guess I'll have to screw it back on , get the cap wrench of and then take the oil filter off.
So a little break before I go back to sort it all out. I guess a strap wrench is the best way?
I do have the bike on the side stand at this point.

 I gotta admit I'm puzzled why so many have a battle changing the oil and filter on the ST, I don't find it's that bad. Changed it 6 times now without a problem.

Is the design / setup different from the ST1100 to the ST1300?

AH-HA!
After my Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance moment that's just what I did.
Easy peasy. Lemon squeezy as the English might be heard to say. :coolit:
OK. I also put in 4 qts of oil and can't see the oil in the sight glass? Yep I'm on flat ground on center stand.

Clair: YES. On the 1300 the oil filter sticks straight aft on the left rear of the bottom of the engine where as on the 1100 it sticks out to the side from the mid part of the left side of the engine case.
The ritual that works best... bike on side stand to drain oil.. drain pans usually won't (unless yours is lower in height than mine) fit under the filter, but a cap filter wrench across under the back of the engine from the right side of the bike, loose the filter, remove the wrench, left hand loose filter, hold something with right hand to direct oil into drain pan... several have come up with ingenious modalities for this... If you use the recommended longer than stock filters such as SuperTec 7317 from WallyWorld (under $3.00) DO NOT try to remove the filter with the cap wrench on the back of the filter... it will jam against the center stand.

I do the entire oil change on the center stand using a cap wrench. No problems, everything clears.
Keep in mind the cap wrench is necessary to properly torque the new oil filter.
