Mark Lawrence has put some great information together, he's answered lots of questions you have or will ask.

Yes, he did a great job of putting things together. I read the site from front to back several times before I did the deal for my ST1300. I had to watch myself to keep from embarasing the salesman. I knew more details about the bike than he did.

That's funny! Salesmen are not always "Up to Speed" on the products they are trying to sell. I bought my ST in Feb of 2003. Brand new model at the time, so I wasn't surprised that the salesman knew nothing about it then, but now I think they should be a little more familiar as it's been here for a couple years now.

I like his site - what do you guys think about his comments on oil filters. Just did a oil change at 110 miles (used Honda oil & filter), but was thinking about taking his suggestions about using Purolator One filter - even though its on cage filter - but his arguements are pretty convincing about it. As far as oil goes in the past I used Mobil 1 XM4T motorcycle synthetic oil, but he makes a good arguement for Rotella also

Again looking for comments

The Honda service rep that looks at warranty will never question an OEM filter. This is the only thing I'm anal about on my bikes. Stems from my John Deere dealer father's teaching many years ago. YMMV etc.

Take a look at Mark's site http://quantumrelativity.calsci.com/ and read about "Quantum Relativity Space, Time, and Gravity in a Quantum Universe"

I have no idea what he is talking about here, but I think he is pretty smart and I agree with almost everything he has written about the ST1300. His bike site is an awesome reference source.

Before I found his site, another ST rider friend, TomZ1300, recommended Rotella and now I know why. But I may stick with the Honda filter for a while. Especially since I bought 1/2 dozen from HDL already.

BTW - Mellow - where did you get the dragon decal? Swambo and I will be riding the dragon in June when we go to the Honda Hoot. Have you riiden the dragon? I wonder if there is an un-wrutten rule that you can't put the dragon decal on until after you have ridden the dragon. I have driven the dragon in my van though.

beastie... got the dragon sticker at the store at the start, or end, of Deal's Gap.... I guess it is an unwritten rule to only use it if you've been there but heck, who's gonna get the sticker and NOT ride the Tail of the Dragon?

I wrote to shell about Rotella and here's part of the reply:
"One negative might be where the engine manufacturer recommends oil meeting JASO
requirements. Part of the JASO requirement limits ash content to 1.2%. Ash con
tent of ROTELLA T exceeds this limit. Oil ash contributes to combustion chamber
and spark plug deposits."
In a long search for what to use for oil & filters, OEM filter designed for this bike, and
HP4 designed for this bike won out. I decided not to question the manufacturer and its
engineers, especially when OEM oil & filters are so cheap.

The OEM filter was not designed for the ST1300 - it's used in several Hondas. It's just another filter. It's ok, but there's nothing special about it.

sulphated ash content refers to a very old test where you take a known weight of oil and burn it. You weigh the remaining ash, and calculate that as a percentage of the original weight. It's a measure of the oil's detergent and dispersant package - more detergents yields more ash. Truckers think 1.5% is a good working minimum.

HP4 is blended for Am.Honda so that they have a house brand. I'm completely mystified by the idea that it's "designed for this bike."

Same filter on Honda Shadows, all the way down to the Aero 750.
I use Pure One / Rotella T in mine

Boy, that's the truth. It took two or three different salesmen at my Honda dealer to tell me that the swing out handle on the left side of the ST1300 was for helping to put the ST up on the center stand. Shows me how little most of them know about the bike they probably sell the least of.

By the way, and I don't mean to change the intent of this thread, but I wonder why Honda does not more aggressively advertise and otherwise promote the best bike in the world--the ST1300. Any ideas?

Why waste money on advertising when the ST1300 wins every big bore "Sport Touring" shootout every magazine does? That's the best advertising in the world, it only cost Honda the use of a bike for a week or two, and we all pay attention to those tests much more than any advertisement.

I've bought stuff off that site a few times. I was not impressed with my last purchase however. I bought a Honda service manual. The calsci site says it's $53. If you click the link it takes you to www.hondadirectlineusa.com and there it's advertised as $60 with free shipping. However when you add the catalog to your cart it adds a $5 handling fee. Then when you checkout it adds another $2.50 to the handling fee to bring the total to $67.50.

It's not a bad site just don't click you mouse to often you might go broke. Alright I'm done complaining for the day.
