Its not the place its the company. I'm happy with a deli and a parking lot if the company is good. :)

Carl your choice.

I guess it really doesn't matter, but if I had to choose I would say granny cooked food is probably the best. Inexpensive isn't bad large portions GOOD! But What ever the majority decides is fine with me.:03biker:

The ambiance is more a function of the company than the architecture. I vote for food. May as well go for the place that has the better Saganaki, right Steve?

OK I guess we can't skip lunch, Eddie voted "yes" to eating. :D

Having eaten at both places, personally I'd sooner go with the crappy decor, wider choice variety, and better food (at least what I ate was, though they already knew I was thinking of bringing a big group by before they made my food). :D Sneaky way to get a good meal. Now the other place knew I might be bringing a big group by and still fed me a bird portion (maybe my Aunt Sarah works there on the sly :D she's a one ice cream scoop to split between everyone kind of lady :duck: ).

Besides, now that I think of it the Ladies place had a bunch of people eating there while the spiffy looking place only had one person besides me at lunchtime.

Carl how are the route coming along? I was out both days this weekend (solo) I guess it was somewhat of a birthday present getting out today they wanted me out of the way to get me a little party going. Had the wif and kids here and the kids kids. Alot of fun. But I did get to do about 200 miles today. On some of the nicest roads I hadn't ever been on before. A gorgeous day in the high 60's crystal clear sky and no traffic.:03biker:

WHAT??? Your Birthday??? Holy Crap... another Taurus in the group eh :p: (I think I remember you saying something about that at the bike show lunch)? Mine is Friday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY from another bull headed… uhhh… from both Dawn & I !!! :)

That riding time is a pretty cool Birthday present, I had similar. Dawn and I went out for 5 hours on back winding hilly roads, not nearly so many miles (she is building up slowly and still needs plenty of rests) It's only her 3d time on the bike. Things started out pretty shaky, but we did a parking lot evening where the MSF & Experienced rider course stuff is laid out and useable, and then did some of the more technical roads here and she is improving very rapidly. Plenty more to go for sure, but it is coming back to her.

Then I went out for an hour and a half on my own and got rid of most of my chicken strips on the new tires, there's still and 1/8 of an inch on the left and 1/4 of an inch on the right. I didn't know if I'd get rid of them at all since the M3s wrap around pretty much more than normal, but it looks like they will soon go away like the others. I'll have plenty of strips left on the front though, that tread wraps way, way, around on that tire. The tires are more solid in turns than the old ones, so far I'm happy enough with them. I normally do like Metzlers though.

On the Route front. I’ve now got the route for both Friday and for Saturday in Mapsource (I had to change Friday’s in order to get around construction that I found in Hunter). I want to transfer them to GPS and see if they transfer correctly. When I get them to transfer right I’ll email them to you and let you know the settings on my GPS that had it transfer correctly.

I know John and Bill will want the routes sent, probably Eddie also.

Brian, do you want Mapsource routes, or STreets & Trips instead so you can do it up in your own program copying the STreets & Trips file?

Who else wants either a MapSource file, or STreets & Trips file emailed? Let me know if you want one and which one or both.

I figure I’ll email an .html route sheet to everyone that doesn’t request Mapsource or STreets & Trips versions.

I’m about to put the DackSTOC route in GPS early this week.

OK guys, I’ve successfully been able to have the 2610 accept these routes without changing them given the settings I outlined before.

I’m posting up the Saturday Route here that starts and ends at the Best Western in Cobleskill. The STreets&Trips file, the MapScource file, and the .pdf route sheet. Grab these Saturday Routes here so I don’t have to email them.

Important for STeve, is to get familiar with the intersections where the route overlaps itself. The GPS may give false instructions there, It will however show the route visually and that will be correct. If you memorize which leg to take at those spots the GPS will take up the route correctly again. If for any reason it starts to try and recalculate (it shouldn’t try, but it did once on me) you will need to stop the route and restart it again. It will restart with the old correct route intact. It probably won’t start recalculating anyway as long as you have automatic recalculation turned off.

The route overlaps itself on SR30 so remember to take a left on 990V the first time.

The GPS gets a bit confused at the South end of SR42 after you take a right turn onto Creek Side Drive (CR47) the GPS tends to think it’s already on SR28 and gives auditory directions as if this is so. Just remember to keep right at the fork, and turn right onto SR28 at the end.

The route also overlaps just before Downsville at BWS1 ending at CR26. Remember to go STraight the first time on SR 206 to Walton.

Returning from Lunch on CR26 after taking a left on SR206/30 look for the tiny road on your left just before the Reservoir Police Station and take a left there. The GPS should be correct everywhere else.

We can go over it when you come over Thursday.

As far as the Route up from my House Friday goes;

Everyone coming that wants a route sheet file or route map file drop me an email at carl@carlt-artwork.com and let me know in the email which types of files you want (.pdf route sheet, .est for STreets& Trips map/directions, or .gdb for MapSource route).

I’ll reply to your email with the requested files attached. Friday’s route starts at my house and goes on the very roundabout route to Cobleskill from there.

Bill, I couldn't find any info. on what exact area was affected, other than by Kerhonkson. The report said no homes were involved, so it must not be by the Granite and that side of 44/55. If it was on the South side of 44/55 we will just miss seeing it... maybe.

Do you have any more precise info. on the fires and what spot it covered? The report I saw said 800 acres.

The following is a cut and paste from the DackSTOC thread for those sharing GPS routes with me. If we get the settings synced the GPS is more likely to calculate the route correctly.
_________________________________________

The STreets and trips file would be useful for Brian and anyone else who has a non Garmin GPS to hand build the route in their own GPS if wanted.

The MapSource route transferred correctly into my STreet Pilot 2610. I suggest anyone putting the route into their GPS also check against the MapSource version to see if the GPS changes anything when it calculated the route.

In MapSource before you display this file, check for the following settings under Edit/Preferences/Routing; Auto Routing, Faster Time, Car/Motorcycle
Avoids/ Toll Road, Unpaved Road, Carpool Lanes.

The following settings should be used for the 2610 to be synced with me and avoid Route recalculation and change:

Menu/options/Guidance; Off Route Recalculation/”Off” (this one’s important so the route stays correct).
Menu/Options/Routing; Faster Time, Better Route, Car/Motorcycle
Avoidance; Toll Roads/Unpaved Roads
Custom Road Prefs.; Major = 1square lit from full avoid
Medium = 5squares lit from full avoid
Minor = 7squares lit from full avoid

Map Setup; Map/Map Detail/ “More (or Most if you want all the labels)”

You'll need to memorize intersections where loops meet. If you remember where to go and go there, the GPS does the rest of the directions correctly past the intersection. However it sometimes tries to skip loops. That means you have to know which way to go and ignore incorrect GPS input at the intersection point of loops. So, even if you have a Garmin GPS with the route in it, it can't hurt to have a backup route sheet printed out for reference. In the end the leader is the only one really needing this stuff unless you get lost which shouldn't happen. Still, it's fun to play with.

Click on the route with the selection tool and look at the arrows, they show the travel direction.
_______________________________________________

Not sure but syncing settings should help get the route with less hand fixing work in the GPS.

STeve, Dawn just rode up the Goat Trail with me yesterday, as we wanted to go up in the mountains on the bikes and get some lunch. Also try and work her up to be able to do the NESTOC mileage. We did 101 yesterday and she felt fine this morning.

Anyway we go up the Goat Trail and I'm pissing and moaning to myself inside my helmet about the bumps, and I ask her what she thinks after we settle in for lunch. She though it was a blast and great fun??? I guess it reminded her of riding the dirt bike when she was young. She said I went a bit too slow as she was kind of in between gears.

So, I told her I'd let you know we took it, and that you'd be jealous. ;)

She was so pleased to have done it well. She started out very, very, rough/rusty and had a hard time going more than 20 miles, but is a different much improved rider at the end of each ride we get to do, and is building stamina quite a bit each time out. Lost her license and registration during the day though, bummer that.

Those are some very special pictures in the ride report STeve, that was a good choice of ride to go on. Thanks for pointing me over there, I'd have missed seeing it otherwise. Very cool to have the escort.

That kind of sucks, I'll let you know if Dawn's does it also. You'd think they would figure a system that didn't do that before they released it to sell.

She rode with it last night and it is better in the wind than her cheap Fulmer was by quite a bit.

SteveST1300

How is she doing on the bike? Is she going to be up for NESTOC? Or will she be getting the first round ready for our return?;)

Carl_T
05-11-2006, 06:50 PM
She’s come a long ways very rapidly.

She'll be there, given no big rain stuff coming down (she's not into riding in steady heavy rain). Her turn speeds are still down some, and she's not much thrilled with any faster than 60-65 on the speedo as yet.
She is decent enough at fast stopping, very steep hills both up and down, surface reading, dirt roads, and general bike handling though.

The question is if she will build enough stamina for the miles in time. So far 100 mi. ride is her longest. She could have done some more. We will be working on that if the weather ever lets us. I have some sheepskin coming.

I'll see where she is at the week before, as to how to handle the grouping. I'm leaning towards John leading group #1 and Dawn and I being a sub group of your group #2 at the back with radio comm. so we are flexible enough to accommodate how she feels.

If she is a bit down on stamina we may meet you at the first small upper Reservoir stop skipping the first hour and a quarter or so of the ride to give her a better shot at it (we'll just run down SR30 to the rest stop).

The options of how to best arrange it, remain open until we see how things are going the week before. She may just be up to the whole thing no problem, we’ll see.

I live in Sayre, PA, which is west of Binghamton, NY. On tuesday of this week, I had to go to a meeting in Ledyard, CT, at Foxwoods. I used the opportunity to get a motorcycle trip in. I planned to take the ST, but the rear tire is shot, and rain was forecast. I rode the LT, which of course is also fun.

Reason for the post here, is that I took the rural route, and cut through the Catskills where you will be for Nestoc. Unfortunately, I won't be there that weekend. I got off 17 at Deposit, ran across 10 up to Walton. There's a grea road that cuts across through Andes. I think it was 2, but not sure. From there, I was on 28 down to Kingston. 28 is ok, but that's the main highway there, so there are police. If I wasn't on a mission, I would have gotten off on more back roads, like the one through Andes. I had a fun and fast trip.

Hey Man! Good to hear from you Todd, I was starting to wonder if all was OK. I’m happy you guys will make it

Don, I’m sorry to hear you two won’t be able to be at NESTOC. :( I haven’t been on 10 between Walton and SR17, it looks like good sweepers on the map, is it a nice run?

That’s County Road 2 and it is part of the NESTOC route (oops, brain fart, actually I dropped it out in favor or CR26 and the BWS roads of the Pepacton). We will be doing ice cream in Andes and that's after running the backside of the Pepacton. You’d have had an even cooler run if you would have dropped off SR10 onto CR26 into Downsville and taken the left before the police headquarters onto the back roads around the Pepacton, then over to 28.

SR28 is notorious for cops and accidents most notably when you get down towards Kingston. The Catskills is an area with some very good motorcycling and scenery, that’s for certain.

Carl_T
05-11-2006, 08:41 PM
Steve, since Dawn just got her helmet, I haven’t had time to install the comm. cable stuff in her helmet to try it out.

I’m hoping it works pretty well at the least when the bikes are reasonably close. With all this rain supposedly coming, you and I may get to try it out at DackSTOC before Dawn and I get to. I’ll try and get all 3 (my two and the one I forgot to give you back) charged and ready to go for DackSTOC. Bring your charger and the other radio if you have room.

Dawn and I took a vitamin gathering ride last night and we came home over a Mohonk Mountain side trip. That has a stop sign on a VERY steep incline, a steep turning climb and descent with some good turns including a very sharp hairpin. She was solid over the whole mountain thing, so the only remaining things in question are the pace and the stamina for miles.

My radio will ready to go. I am looking forward to it. I am in the process of trying to get my tires filled with nitrogen. Costco uses it for all their new tire installs. I just have to try and get them to fill my tires as they don't sell motorcycle tires there. I hope to be able to get it done tomorrow. The bike is ready I just have to clean it up a bit and start packing. I am hoping to leave Thursday maybe as early as three for DakSTOC. See you all next week.:03biker:

Carl_T
05-12-2006, 07:42 PM
So if you have your tires filled with nitrogen and you want to check them, then lose a little nitrogen checking, what do you top off with?

This won't be anything like the Hindenburg will it? A big silver blimp, tires up in the air giving lift, Steve turning red from hanging upside down, hovering over the Adirondacks, lightening bolts cracking all around?

Hah! Just kidding.

We got our sheepskin butt pads today (too much information?). They come with a strap which meant I had to unbolt my seat to install and bolt it back up again. Now I look at the weather and it continues to PO me with predictions of rain. Maybe I should un-strap the **** thing and just lay it on the seat so I can shake it out periodically when it gets wet from stopping. Grrrrrr.

Where's John when you need him? I wonder if he's ridden with his in the rain without shaking it out? I suppose an unbolting and un-strapping is in order.

SUN dances everyone I wanna leave my butt pad strapped fast.

Mine came with only one speed clip, you undue it and slide it out from under the seat, but it does require you to remove the seat to install, maybe we could just shove it down the inside of our pants, hmmm, no underware......

It does remind me though that Dawn and I are going to try some of that underwear stuff made for bicycles with mesh (the air hole ones, to go with mesh gear). I don't think it will get here in time for DackSTOC, but should be ready to go for NESTOC and make more miles more comfortable, hopefully.

Couldn't agree more, Bones. I recently checked out the Under Armour materials (and price) at Dick's. Then headed over to Walmart to see what they carried. Walmart sells a brand called 'Athletic Works' that is the same material as Under Armour. But instead of $18 per shirt for Under Armour, the Athletic Works shirts are $7. I bought a short and long sleeved shirt at Walmart and am very pleased with the fit and the wicking capability.

BTW - Sorry to say that I won't be able to make NESTOC this year. Family obligations that weekend hold priority. But as long as we don't have t-storms or torrential downpours in the forecast, I'll see some of you at DackSTOC. :03biker:

Dawn and I went out last night for some practice for her, even though it was windy and cold. We will likely go out for a bit tonight also. We got on a beastly steep hill at a T intersection stop sign complete with 6 inch lip of extra blacktop on the T road edge, that had to be started up over and crossed, all the while on a steep grade. It was a very ****ety spot with limited visibility and no room for mistakes. I won't be going back any time soon, but she did very well with it.

Hey John, you will be leading Group #1, for NESTOC, so memorize the road names and directions of travel at the overlaps in the route.

I laid it out so it only overlaps up top at Rt. 30, and for a short bit by Downsville and the Pepacton Reservoir.

The upper overlap portion in the morning you stay on SR 30 from Middleburgh to turn left on 990V (you don't take any rights off 30 in the morning).

In the evening's return, on the upper portion, you turn left off of Shew Hollow Rd. onto SR30, then turn left on W. Fulton Rd. when it comes up.

Then when nearing lunch time basically by Downsville you need to remember to go straight through the town on up SR206 to Lunch without turning off to the side.

Then after Lunch when returning on Hawley-Downsville/Knox you need to remember to turn left onto SR206/30 then left just before
the Police Station (the Police Station is visible on the left coming out of town) to do the back (north) side of the Reservoir on up to Andes. It's a thin little road with no designation in the real world, the GPS knows it as BWS1, but it's the only one before the Police station after leaving the Village.

If you memorize those two spots you will know where to go by the visuals on the GPS regardless of what it is saying to do. The GPS will accurately follow the route the rest of the time.

If it ever tries to recalculate the route in one of the overlap spots, stop riding, stop the route, shut off the GPS, restart the route and it will be back to normal.

Ok guys, the time is near enough for an update on this. Dawn is doing well on her Ninja 250, but has a couple of issues (the main one of which is stamina).

She will meet us at the Otter to shorten the Friday ride up for her by a bit. Saturday’s ride length has the potential to be a problem for her, so things will be set up Saturday like this.

John will lead Group #1.

STeve will lead Group #2

STeve is riding two-up, so it may be a natural for some of the couples to hook into his group.

We should figure out who wants to be in which group before Saturday morning.

Dawn and I will hook onto the tail of STeve’s group as a sub group to start, with the understanding that we can break off at any time without anyone waiting for us or looking for us. STeve will have his own sweep who will ride in front of me.

This way we can cut things short for her any time she physically needs it (IF she needs it) and she will not feel compelled to up her pace too quickly as well (she may or may not be on the pace at that time).

I know the route well enough to get Dawn and I to wherever we need to be, and we already practice as our own group of two so it will be a configuration she is used to. With this endless rain she has only been able to get in 6 or so rides so far. That is substantially less than we had hoped.

The rides were strengthening her quite well indeed at the start, but the *&((%$$**## rain layoff has set her back to aches like the first ride she took.

The groups #1 & #2 will leave a few minutes apart as an experiment, to see if rest stops can be done all together this way or not. The exception will be Dawn and I, as we will start out from the rest stops at the back of STeve’s group with the proviso that we can drop back as we please.

In addition we will not be doing the first SR443 loop to Middleburgh with you (the Middleburgh stop for you guys is not mandatory, but looked like a good potty place if the ladies needed it, since it’s a long ride to the next one in Margaretville).

Instead Dawn and I will ride down 30 from the motel to hook up with you in the morning at the Reservoir stop on Rt.990V at the Schoharie Reservoir. We’ll be waiting for you there as 990V has one pull-off there that looked adequate.

Cutting off this first morning loop will make the ride more like the time involved in Friday’s ride for her, and more like something she may pull off physically.

Unfortunately the lunch spot is at the far end of the route this time, so we may or may not make that distance with you. If not, we will grab a bite elsewhere and may meet you at another point along the route (perhaps Andes) for the ride back, that would give her a rest in the middle if needed.

How much she will be able to do will be decided on the fly as we go, and this setup will easily allow for that. If she was in shape to start riding last year, I’m certain she would be ready to just take up as one of the group by now, but she started quite late this year and the time when she can be an everyday part of the group isn’t quite here this soon after re-taking up riding.

I am truly pleased with her rapid progress so far, and we are both very much looking forward to this ride.

I have a option for you Carl.. Saturdays ride includes some loops... if Dawn gets tired park her bike at a loop origin and she can ride the loop on the back of mine. Or if you want I'll swap bikes for the loop and you can ride 2-up with Dawn. Whatever works for you.

Dawn wanted me to give you a big THANK YOU Eddie. She said you really helped relieve her mind about being a pain in the *** to everyone or being stranded. She thinks she will be fine, and I do too. However there are odd times when something kinks up when it normally doesn't and that would be her concern.

My thoughts exactly.

Carl_T
05-24-2006, 02:07 PM
OK STeve and Eddie.

I filled in the couples names so they become familiar.

I don't know whether we want to split into couples and singles, that would be 5 couples, and 4 singles with Dawn and I tagging along a bit of distance behind.

The other option would be to try and split the groups into pace with the riders who want to go quicker jumping into group #1. Though I'm not sure that's needed.

I'm good with either method. (couples and singles/ or pace) The couples and singles seem to work out to a good number though and it would put Eddie into Group #1 the smallest group as he wanted.

Anyone have strong preferences?

Carl_T
05-24-2006, 02:10 PM
OK Bones, so far it is looking like singles group #1, couples group #2 with the Dawn and I in our own. That's unless someone comes up with an objection or strong preference.

Cool, I updated the Group list.

OK STeve, I'll check, make sure everything is absolutely correct on the route and get it to you and John probably Friday. You guys just memorize where to go where the overlaps are as at those points you need to go by the visual on the screen rather than whatever the GPS might tell you. It's just a small amount as I tried to keep it to a minimum.

Todd we look forward to seeing you guys Thursday night, let us know for certain though.

I hope you can make it early STeve, anyone that isn't real late in the evening, we'll all go in to New Paltz and eat at McGillocuggies for supper.

I'll hunt up what I might have for air mattresses and sleeping bags tomorrow night. The two couples get the pull out couches Thurs.

Hey Carl

I'm still here, I don't don't post much because what I would say usually has already been said, I do read through the new headers daily and read all posts to this thread.

Yes, Elaine and I will be at the Hotel Friday afternoon, hope to get in by 5PM. We may have one more to add to the group an ST rider named Pete from Beamsville, Ontario. I'm not sure if he'll actually be coming but, he may. We are supposed to meet Friday morning and ride in through the Finger Lakes area prior to getting to Cobbleskil. As for Saturday We'll be there with bells on ready to ride the day away.

Eddie,

Dawn & I are doing conditioning today, we did a ride past our reservoir, on up past Cooper Lake to Hunter (to check the construction out). Then we went on northwest to take in County road 2 with it's awesome view and major downhill run. We wound our way back home past the Shokan for a good days ride (I'm tired, and Dawn is too but she did great).

She said to tell you that she is now going into the last phase of her training for the day. she's going into the martinis to see how they fly.

As far as she knows she has all the ingredients to make the picture perfect martini you displayed. She has the Grey Goose, Vermouth, olives, picks, and plenty of ice. Anything she forgot? See ya thurs night. I will check to see if you need to bring anything tomorrow but I think we got it covered here on this end.

Fair warning DackSTOC guys with GPS. My powerlet plug and the GPS end connection had corrosion on it from the water, including the connection points on the GPS itself. I had some CFC-50 around and that took care of it, but if you left the GPS on the bike check your connectors.

Carl I found the same on mine. And it took me 2 days to change my left light bulb.
No matter what I tried I couldn't get the connector off. The right one popped onand off no problem, so today I took off the left side tupperware to get to the headlight assy. Once there I tried again and the connector just wouldn't budge. I eventually had to pry the damn thing off. Turns out when the bulb popped it must have sparked a bit and soldered the bulbs blade into the connector.
But after much sweat and cursing its back together with 2 fresh bulbs.:03biker:

Carl_T

WOW that sucks! I'll have to check my lights out and make sure all are operating OK.

It's hot as blue blazes here the last few days, but it's supposed to only be in the 70s for NESTOC. I hope they are right about that. So, far it looks like we may have to dodge a shower or two, if it's warm enough and the shower short enough rain gear won't be needed as you'll dry out quick enough(specially you bastiges with the adjustable wind shields that don't get wet anyway). However it's best to have rain gear with, just in case. They've been saying showers here the last few days and I haven't seen one drop.

We're bringing our air gear along with a liner for the jacket. If it's colder in the morning we'll throw the rain pants and jacket over for wind breakage. That way if the weatherman is full of it we won't roast.

Tried Dawns Nolan today when going for ink for the printer. I love the flip up deal, but it sure doesn't move much air inside so it's hotter than mine. Now I have to obsess whether I want more heat and flip up convenience, or less heat/more air, and aggravation getting my glasses into the helmet.

I've still got to change oil and filters in both bikes (Dawns a teeny bit shy of 700 mi. on hers). Also we are 3/4 packed now.

See you soon. I'm heading to the STore to pick up a few things. I'll be back before you arrive. In case I'm not just hang in the STudio/garage, or on the porch and I'll show up shortly.

Well, I'm back in, it's 6PM and raining and lightening like blue blazes. Nobodies showed yet, likely held up a tad with odd storms passing through.

Afraid you maybe the only one of us who rolls as well wired as you do man, most likely won't hear from them 'til Sun. Did Steve snore last night? That's pretty funny! Forcast I just looked at spelled AuquaSTOCK II, Cobbelskill, NY. Since things seem to come in threes, we'll let CTSTOC wrap up the soggy curse and get on with some dry splendor up here for NNESTOC in the end of Sept!:D

Rubber down guys, and don't follow the Cardinal through any stop signs!
