One of my old friends is a retired Park Ranger who spent his last 20 years "suffering" at Glacier National Park, Montana. He knows that Lubbock is kind of low on beauty, so he sends me Montana pictures. I've got to get back up there. Probably taken this week, Terry.

I have been VERY lucky to have been there in Glacier the last 3 years but always in August... Though,,, when I went up to Jasper after leaving Banff last year it was snowing on me then so,,, those pictures looked more like what I saw up in Canada speaking of fresh snow...

I haven't made it to Banff yet, but it's definitely high up on the list.

Next time I go, I'm taking one of the red buses, so I can enjoy the scenery:D

Here's some more mountain pictures: The south side of Mt Cook, South Island, New Zealand; and the same shot taken from some distance along the southern shore of Lake Pukaki; and me and the missus walking across Fox Glacier on Mt Cook's northern face.

DAYUM! - I love New Zealand - it's a biker's paradise, that's for sure.

I went to Glacier in '03, lovely place. Get there soon if you can. They are predicting that all the glaciers will be gone forever by 2030 or so. What glaciers they have now are more often glacier by definition not what most of us think of when we think of the word Glacier. It's a beautiful place with or without snow, but if you can get there now to see what is left, I recommend it.

Great riding.

Took a ride on the "Road to the sun" after my IBA "Border 2 Border Insanity" ride. Sure was great to slow down & see some scenery. Words or pictures can't do justice to that place. Does anyone remember the name of that huge log hotel when the red busses seemed to be based out of?

Here are some of my best answers:
Should Going-to-the-Sun be traveled east to west? - It depends on the direction you are riding the loop, either way is magnificent - I went from east to west heading into Idaho.

Are any of the roads best traveled in a particular direction? Route 2 and Going to the Sun are most of what you can navigate in the park. You can take 17 up the east side, but the northwest area has no access. There are some nice areas south of the park and a few indian reservations you can camp. Any direction is good.

Are there locations in the park/area that are best seen or traveled at a particular time of day (e.g. sunrise/sunset)? Depends on where you stay and the weather at the time.

Which are the "not to be missed" attactions in or near Glacier NP? If you are moved by that type of country (who ins't?), anywhere is "no miss" on a motorcycle.

What month is best to visit? Mid July - Mid August. Thru June there is the possibility some of the roads won't be open yet from the winter closing.

Is the Many Glaciers excursion worthwile? -You can see just as much on a bike. Just be careful sightseeing.

Is the Canadian side (Waterton Lakes NP) worth the excursion/hassle? -The area is really nice north of the park. the are some great places to stop all through that area.

Allowing for frequent stops to take pics/enjoy the scenery and short hikes to viewpoints at pullovers, how much time is needed to visit Glacier? - At east 2 days for the area. Just west going through Missoula and going south thru Idaho are some excellent twisty bike roads - like Rt 93, well maintained and very little traffic.

Thanks for the advice.

This thread is absolutely killing me! I've been meaning to get through Glacier for the last three years now, and keep skirting by it.

Stop the madness! I'm drooling all over my keyboard!

Going to the sun road, if your a little squeamish on height going from east to west is best that way for the most part you are on the side away from the drop off. When my wife and I rode out with her sister and husband we came from west to east. My sister in law was petrified as soon as my brother in law tried to look at the scenery she would slap his helmet and tell him to watch the road.:biker:

After laughing, I started thinking about riding, along a cliff, with my eyes closed. This thread is going to do me in! :scared2:
