A Long Weekend

Took Friday off work, took a ride to Corryong, around 468km via Bonnie Doon, Whitfield, Happy Valley and Tallangatta.



Parked the Mighty ST13 outside Room 3 at the Mountain View Motel, knocked off a few tins of Carlton Draught and waited for the other riders to arrive.

My old '83 KZ1100, which was my primary bike before I got the ST13, is "The Mighty KZ." I haven't officially named my ST yet, but leaning towards "TruSTy."

Saturday was the opportunity to ride with the group to Tallangatta for a coffee and a beef steak & kidney pie. The MJ's Bakery at Tallangatta bakes a pretty good pie and serves an equally as good capucinno.



With rain threatening we donned our wet weather gear and got ready for the ride to Walwa via Granya Gap Road and Jingellic.

Bridge over the Murray River (our longest river) on NSW/VIC border near Jingellic.




Lunch at Walwa General Store.



Another 120km back to Corryong for night two via Briggs Gap Road, crested a ridge for this view.



And this.



That's Mt Kosciuozko in the background, at 2,228m (7,310 feet) it's our highest mountain, and as we are having one of the best snow seasons for many years, this is about as much snow as we get here in AUS.

At Cudgewa I spotted a old church (an 1890's build for the Presbetarians) but now converted into a private dwelling - very neat. The lady of the house invited me in to take some pics, but I had images of The Exorcist in my head and thought it prudent to re-mount and ride,



Today's route.



Back at 4:00pm time for a few post-ride beers, a nap, a few pre-dinner beers and then dinner with a few more beers.

Beautiful country you have there! But there's the snakes... Of course, here on the west side of Oregon/Washington States, the cougars have decided to snack on the odd tourist now and then...:fuzz1: But no snakes...

It isn't the snakes you have to watch, it's those darn dunny spiders. They're just wrong.

We are city people, but do venture to the rural areas whenever possible, had 100's of experiences bush camping. In my 60 plus years I think I have only seen a snake may be five or six times.

Although one time, on the Mighty ST13 riding some back roads through sugar cane fields beside the Clarence River in northern NSW, I came across a grass python, lying across the road, sunning itself in the hot Aussie sun, it was about 6m in length, something like this (pinched from Google):


I got a bigger fright than it did.

Just check under the seat BEFORE you assume a seated position.

Being a Yank colonial (born in UK), the only things we have seen about Australia are Quigley Down Under and the Croc Man so we assume that snakes and crocs are EVERYWHERE! I live 45 miles east of Seattle and we proudly promote our "Raining in Seattle" image... it helps keep the Californians from moving up here! ToddC will attest that the rain is not quite as heavy as the world thinks... Methinks, that ToddC and I should ship our STeeds down there for a bite of Australian hospitality.

You don't need to worry about their bite, at 6m they'll curl around and strangle you. Still the only one like that I've seen, and will probably be my last.

The creatures that have my respect are the sharks and the crocs, especially along the coast in FNQ (Far North Queensland) and in NT (Northern Territory), although has been said that there aren't any sharks near the river mouths - the crocs have eaten them all.

Sunday, ride home via Bryants Gap, Lockhart Gap, Myrtleford Tolmie, Mansfield, Flowerdale - along this route:

Was mentioned in another thread, temp dropped to 0 Celsius riding over the range at Tolmie, a bit of snow and sleet, road was okay but I did slow down - a bit.

Lunch at the Mansfield Coffee Merchant was pretty damn good (I mention this just in case you guys ever visit AUS). Lot of traffic returning from the Mount Buller snowfields, renowned for heavy Police presence, stuck to the speed limits until we turned off the Goulburn Valley Highway.

Stopped at the Flowerdale Pub for our last refreshment, that's me with the lemon squash (I don't need a beer whilst riding, I can be silly enough without it).



Another 40km to home, arrived around 5:00pm, 1,270km for the weekend, the ST didn't miss a beat.
