We left Alamosa, headed west on 116 to South Park where we jumped on
149 and headed North. Wx radar was showing some rain to the West, so
we decided to forego Kebler Pass. Of all the times I have been in this neck
of the woods, I have NEVER been on 550 North to South.. Have always
taken the South to North route, so I decided that this would be a good
time to take a look at what I have been seeing in my rear view mirror all
these years..
Took a fair number of pix so it was hard choosing what to post here..

Rt 149 is a nice ride.. Pretty much follows the Rio Grande river up to
near its source...

Slumgullon pass was a treat. Coming up the South side, not "real"
impressive, but coming down the North side is a good bike road,
good road surface and lots of turns.. The view overlooking
Lake City was nice..

Sometimes when you just plug in a start and a finish point, your
GPS will take you on some "different" routes.

this road ended up at the Blue Mesa impoundment, just a little
East of Colorado 92

Stopped in Montrose for supper, then headed on
down 550 towards Durango.. We had been running into
a little rain off and on all day, but even in the rain,
the San Juans are nice..

Heading South on 550 was a nice suprise, it's amazing
how the same road can be so different when headed the
other direction.....

Tomorrow we will be wandering on towards home, depending
on the weather, we may head back on up to Montrose and catch
50 East and on to Colorado Springs, or maybe head on on to Glenwood
Springs and catch the pretty part of I-70 back to Denver.
Been a great trip... Heck, I am even looking forward to the next
trip out here already..

Yep - hard to go wrong in that part of Colorado. My better half and I have been rambling through that area since the mid 1970's. Have run 550 both ways and the scenery is always spectacular. My wife has a fear of heights and for some reason North to South affects her more - not sure why, but suspect that there's no gradual climb from Ouray like coming out of Durango.
If you don't mind backtracking, Hwy 50 has a lot to offer - a little congested on weekends east of Salida due rafters on the Arkansas River, but otherwise nice scenery.

In June we came up from Taos thru Chama & Pagosa Springs and followed CO 149 along the Rio Grande - spent the night in Creede. Fantastic dirt road loop past 7 or 8 mines dating back 120+ years. Continued thru Gunnison & Montrose.
Spent a couple of nights in Ouray, meandered over to Moab and down thru Monument Valley across the Navajo & Hopi Reservation to Winslow, AZ.
Decided to 2 lane it back to ATL so ran US 60 thru AZ to Socorro, NM. Did the Alien thing in Roswell, but still didn't want to go home, so we headed south to Pecos, TX and on down to Ft Davis. Really enjoy the lack of crowds in that area and peaceful scenery. This year all was super green due above average rain. Great trip in the family truckster - can't wait to duplicate it in the future on the ST.
Enjoy the rest of your trip and drive safe!!

That part of CO was my home for 7 years, and the 3 passes on 550 were never quite as meaningful as during a white-out at 10 mph, both feet down! (OK, just kidding, I did that in the truck) Made the summer runs all the more enjoyable on the ST, though. The Camp Robber Cafe in Montrose is a "don't miss" place, although Farquardt's in Durango does a pretty mean burger, and their beef fajitas are hard to beat.

Putt, I'm the ST rider you met in Leadville. We rode to the top of Mt. Evans yesterday. What a ride. I'll be posting all of my trip when I get back home.

Hope you get a new ST soon.

How was Evans?? When we went thru Idaho Springs yesterday, it looked like
there might have been some nasty weather in that direction..

It rained on us all the way to the top. Was'nt too bad, however once we got to the top it started snowing. We didn't stay too long though, it's not alot of fun riding in the snow, especially on that kind of road.

I'll have some pictures of it when I get back home and get them sorted out and posted.

Later,

Later,
Many years ago, the wife and I stayed in Idaho Springs, we met another couple that were riding who were staying at the same motel as we were, so
we planned a ride up Evans... Got up there around 1000, walked around for a while, and I mentioned to the other riders that there was a storm coming in and we were going to head back to Idaho Springs. The other couple decided to stay for a while... They stayed all right, they didnt get back
till around 6 that night, got snowed in on top of Evans. That was in
late August....
