No worries- my post reads rather harshly, and that is not my intention.

For five years, I sold the highest performing radar- made in Texas- "Stalker", so I speak with some authority and lots of experience (every single California Highway Patrol car and bike has my radar onboard). You are correct that microwave doesn't "bend"- but it bounces (reflects) very well, even off the pavement. The point I am making there is the beam will arrive rather scattered, so elevation change on a bike simply would not provide measurable difference. Be fun to go experiment to prove the posit.

On the other side of the table, I've been running radar/Lidar detectors for ten or twelve years. It is my opinion the tiny elevation delta available on a motorcycle simply doesn't compare to even a 10' antenna mast. But that's fine- everyone should do what pleases/gives them comfort.

NorCalBusa,

I didn't read your last post before I replied.

Try running 20-25 over in Texas with the troopers sitting over a hill and very little traffic between you and him. If I don't pick him up zapping the car 3/4-1 mile ahead of me when I am down on the other side of the long grade, I'm nailed when I top that hill.

And you're right the BEST place (for range) would be on the top of the helmet. :D

I THINK THE BEST THING IS TO GET IT AS CLOSE TO EYE LEVEL AS POSSIBLE. I'VE GOT MY ESCORT 8500 X50 MOUNTED ON A RBIS WITH A RAM BALL. IT SITS ABOUT 3 INCHES ABOVE THE DASH AND PROVIDES GOOD ALERTS. Sorry for shouting, had my caps lock down

I have my 8500 mounted to an RBM clutch resevoir mount. NIce and high! Worked Great!!!!!!! last time I met SP head on and rounding the corner doing 85 in a 60, BAM that good ole dependable radar went off at the instant he turned it on! also worked Great 2 weeks ago coming down off Mount Rainier through the twisties and before I saw hime, and he saw me, my passport recognized his sneaky Park Ranger truck before he rounded the corner. I just waved as we passed, both going about 35 in the zone.

As long as we're talking about the best, has anyone had any experience with the new Escort 8500 X2 Black. It is being advertised as 40%better. Just wondering if its worth the upgrade cost.

I'm real happy with my Escort 9500ix. It updates redlight cameras as well as frequently passed motion sensors. Has laser too but iffin it goes off you're most likely already busted anyway... One thing I've found is they have a tendancy to blow a fuse in the USB circuit (PC updates etc). That's a $100 fix from Escort with no gurantee it doesn't happen again.
