Just picked up an '01 ST1100 with 76K on it. The seller has about 50 lbs on me plus he rode the bike mostly 2 up, so the rear shock was set very stiffly. When I went to back off the pre-load I discovered that the bike has a Progressive shock installed. The numbers on the spring are 1156 and 375/465. Can anyone tell me exactly what I've got?

Thanks! ---Jay

If it has spring pre-load adjustment and rebound at the bottom then it may be a Progressive Series 420. No longer in production. Replaced by the series 465. My ST1100 has this shock, sent in for rebuild (cost $50 plus shipping) last year. Great shock. Cost me about $450 sometime ago.

Get someone to help you set the sag then play with the rebound until you're happy. After setting the pre-load sag, set the rebound at maximum and adjust downwards to optimal.
