I like my Avons.....put a set on the '83, and the 2001A came with them....
My question is: when are they worn out?
I am sure I could dig up my tread depth gauge to check them....
Thanks

Thanks Fred...
I spent a little time looking for wear bars.......didn't see any, so I am taking that to mean that I'm not that close...
Have fun!

You put what model of Avons on what bike? Need more specifics. Tires with no tread on the center portion are tough when it comes to guessing how much life is left in them. I changed some Metzlers out for an ST1100 owner last week and there were steel belts on the center showing but the closest wear bar we could find IN the tread was just barely flat with the surrounding surface.. I don't personally like tires with this tread pattern because you just never know and if you're in flatland USA like some of us you'll never touch the wear bars.

Joe makes a good point, I did a quick google and found some pics of where the wear bars are on an Avon 240

and marked in white:

There's also a symbol, which varies from mfg to mfg, on the outer edge of the tread to indicate where the wear bars are located.

If you can't see the wear bars, then your tread might be so shallow that they're blending-in with the tread depth.

That means your tire is done.

Mine don't look as worn as that but I have many more miles on them. My rear tire gave up today with just over 16K on the pair. JUST starting to get to the wear bars. Went out after work to find I had 2.5 lbs pressure in the rear. Pumped it up and when checking it heard that terrible noise... air hissing out through a small hole. Found the spot easily. The steel belt failed in just one spot and there was a slight bulge and a small tear in the rubber where the air was escaping. put a plug in it just to see if it would hold long enough to get home and air was still leaking out but not as much. After riding anyway (about 25 mph) just to get home the plug filled in the hole better and the tire is currently holding low pressure. Time to replace pronto before any more riding is done. I would say THAT is when they are worn out!

Debating now what to get. Think I'll be stuck with what the dealer has since I really don't want to be off the bike any longer than I have to. This will be the first time I HAVE to take the cage to work since last February. Not a big deal for those in the southern states but up here that's not so common. Riding all year that is.

If they are like Avon Storms the wear bars are located by the tiny initials TWI found along the edge of the tread surface right out at the edges. The letters are small, maybe 1/16" or 3/32" high and the initials TWI are spaced about 20" apart around the circumference of the tire. The wear bars are found across the tread from one edge to the other wherever you find a TWI.

Mine are Avon Storm 2s. TWI are near center as well as away from center in many of the tread groves. I still had some life left since only one of the wear bars near the center was only getting close to being flush with the surface.

Well, couldn't contact anyone to order tires from on short notice online. Guess Sandy affected all those businesses. No dealers had a rear tire in stock but the local Honda dealer could get BT023 tires here from the next state over in 2 days. I wanted the rear to be a BT020. Found out today those are on a minimum 2 week backorder! Yikes!! Changed my order to BT023 for both front and rear. Front tire will be here tomorrow and rear tire will arrive HOPEFULLY by Friday so dealer can get them both replaced on Saturday. Paying WAY too much for them at the dealer but don't want to wait weeks to get back on the road. Should have ordered 2 weeks ago when I was thinking of it.
