Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

I don't think an upgraded ST needs to be over $20k. The Super Ten has more technology than the current ST for $14k. The FJR is way ahead of it for well under $20k. Currently Honda is trying to sell an $13k bike for $18k while wondering why they aren't selling. Try coming up with $18k worth of bike and see what happens.

+1 I think if they want to keep an ST in a viable market, they have to play with the FJR and C14, keep it under the Trophy and RT price wise. They need to leave the Wing to play with the K16.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

Here's a thought: Given the relatively small sales number for the ST, and the cost of doing anything to upgrade/change it, maybe Honda has realized it would have to priced as high as the F6B. The other builders (BMW excepted and they are building two bikes from one platform) have nothing to compete directly with the 'Wing so they are free to push their "top" bike. The ST has never been and will never be Honda's top bike. $$$s still rule in the market place.

Essentially, this is what I think too. Either you sell more of them, or you sell them for a higher price. If you can't do either, then you don't build it. If the sport touring market is shrinking at the same time, then it becomes even more difficult to make the business case for it.

Maybe the ST13 will become the next Kaw Concours Gen I, which Kaw basically made for 25 years before finally walking it out to pasture for the mercy shooting. :D

The Connie earned my respect when I once road 1,080 miles on it in 17.5 hrs.

When we see that the BMW GT 1600 have some problems (transmission and electronic), we realise that the ST 1300 was made to last and give satisfaction after years.

I agree that no one will pay anything over 20k. But Honda is Honda because they can figure it out to make it under 18k. Civic brand new is 19k with EVERYTHING. Now I know they are 2 different animals but it shows it is possible. I believe they can come up with a decent upgraded bike without increasing the price. As said before, very few wants to buy a bike 12 years old, they buy used for the half price which is same as the brand new. If upgrades kicks in, it is not going to be the same case. When a person decides to buy, they compare... All honda needs is to beat them in the comparison.
I am wondering if vfr1200f's single swingarm can be applied to st1300. I HATE flange and its bearings, all that spinning dead unsprung weight, rubber pieces, heavy rear rim, molly grease, all with passion....
Does anyone know how much an st1300 rear rim weight? With the bearings and spacer? Brake disc and abs ring taken off. I am wondering how much weight difference there is with a vfr1200f's rear rim.

As best as I can measure on a bathroom scale a complete ST1300 rear wheel with drive spline and mounted tire weighs +/- 36 lbs. No brake disc or ABS ring.

I think that this was covered earlier in this thread. One opinion is that there would be no weight savings, and possibly weight increase because the single swingarm has to have tortional strength.

Or, has to be higher tech metals and fabrication techniques to handle the torsion without adding weight ... and that leads to higher price ... which it seems we're complaining about.

Clean rear rim without tire, brake rotor and ABS ring weighs 24lb 3.2oz. It does have the standard tire valve installed along with the lightest color - silver...

Thanks scooter and dduelin for the info. I will try to find out what vfr1200f rear wheel weight is.
Vfr1200f's swing arm does not seem any bigger than st's. Even it was bigger, st1300 has double arm anyway but getting rid of flange and its bearingssss pricelesss...

Not possible. The volume on the Civic brings unit costs way down compared to any motorcycle. (Did ya all know the Gold Wing, at least, has more physical piece parts than a Civic?

Not to mention that a fair percentage of parts and components from a Civic are used on other Honda platforms. Look no further than brake rotors for the Civic, which are a fraction of the price you shell out for the motorcycle discs. Yet the motorcycle discs appear as they would be easier to manufacture (a single flat disc compared with a two layer disc with cooling fins.) There isn't much opportunity to share disc part numbers between two motorcycle models either.

Most? MC brake rotor assemblies are steel. Typical car rotors are a chunk of cast iron. The cooling slots just mean less iron and a faster casting time.

With cars there's probably a lot more opportunity for economical use of automation and use of TMS.
