Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

Folks scoff at the price of an ST... they'd go unconscious at the 30k and 36k price of the Motus.... No thanks.
But it's only a few grand more than the K1600? Look at what you get... :D

Exactly my thougts. Yes, it is more expensive. But if you really, really, REALLY like the forward-facing v4, then this is an option -- that actually exists. ;)

Strange bike--pushrod v-4 instead of overhead cams.
The guys at Motus are all about "evolving" traditional American motors. Their V4 is known as the "Baby Block" and it's a pushrod design by intent. They love Corvettes and much of the engineering on the V4 involved people and companies experienced with pushrod V8's. They'll even sell you a crated Baby Block motor in case you want to fit it into your own golf cart or quad or what have you.

Not sure about the others, but Dirk Thelen completed the Enduro d'Agadir in Morocco on a nearly stock R1200GS earlier this year and finished 15th out of 100 starters. It is a four day desert race of 683 miles. They basically changed the tires and added an Akrapovic exhaust. The story was published in the July edition of the MOA Owner's News.
I think the only thing I remember from that issue was Steve Hall's letter to the editor ......... his 2012 R12RT had an oil leak from a porous casting and the demo 2013 RT the dealer gave him to ride on a planned trip to Utah broke down from surging issues. His letter praised the dealer's effort not to ruin his trip to Utah. I guess I focused on the two BMWs that tried to do just that instead of the dealer's efforts to salvage his trip.

It's the rider not the bike, Dirk might have finished higher if he wasn't riding a 600 lb Panzer. The GS is probably in a class by itself in the Soft Roaders.

Well, it is possible that Americans can build a quality motorcycle... ;)

I'm sure they can but most folks won't even by a 1st-year honda. I would want some type of tradition of reliability if I'm dropping 30k on a bike. Comparing that to the K1600 is like comparing a sleek leer jet to a high speed mustang... just not the same thing.

I would take the GS out of your "soft roaders" class. For that matter, the Vstrom as well. The "roads" the hard core riders at ADVRiders.COM ride are single track goat paths that I would feel scared taking on a 250 single.

But you did say it was the rider so.....

Just saying that, for something that is relatively exotic, $30k is not that bad. If you can afford the price of admission (like the K1600) you can afford to get it fixed.

The real question is, is it fun to ride?

We need to designate someone from here who would sign up for a test ride and then report back...

Any volunteers?

Nothing wrong with this bike a $14,000 price tag wouldn't fix. :D

(I think the most I've ever paid for a bike was my NEW 95 VFR, last new bike I've purchased. my USED 91 ST1100 in 93 was about the same price. Still got her. :D

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

30k ???
Who cares if it is fun or not? Buy a cbr1000 for 10k and than buy a triumph explorer for 18k spend the 2k for a nice holiday with some EXTRASSSSS...... :)
When you feel like fun take the cbr for an hour. Rest,,,, Explorer will do...
I agree with Mellow that I don't trust anything new with 30k dollarsssss. If it comes out a patato there is no refund....
