Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

One of the things a lot of the reviews of the VFR 1200 mention is vibration through the pegs and grips. Is it counterbalanced?

There is no counterbalance shaft. Honda chose a 28 degree crankpin offset to obtain primary balance because of the 76 degree V angle. Or so I read.

The ST13 is counterbalanced to prevent torque roll, due to its crankshaft being in line with the chasis. This also adds a lot of weight to the engine.

I wish they can make something like an in-between class (tourer and adventure) bike; upright seating but not too high ground clearance, normal front wheel instead of 21" something for fire roads if needed, nothing like a dirt bike or off roader.. Without a beak but have enough wind protection... So 90 percent road 10 percent off road machine..
They do. It's called a v-strom ;)

- and the Varadero...;)
The Varadero was big disappointment here. I test rode one before I bought the wee. The engine reminded me of the Honda Pacific Coast - kinda clunky. By the time it came to Canada, it was already 10 years old. They sold a couple. It has since departed.

V-storm is chain isn't it? :(
Yes. But that means that you can easily change the final gearing ratios to either optimize it for off-road use, or optimize it for Interstate use.

One of the things that I found annoying about the R1200GS is that first gear is too tall. The only way to change that on the GS is to buy the GS Adventure...

It's designed for off-road use (ish)... shaft drive isn't what most folks are looking for in that market. "Self Recovery" is one of the most important issues in that environment.

I think the term is evolving into "soft roader" to describe street bikes that can handle a bit of unpavement. The GS, the CrossTourer, the Super Ten, the Wee, the Versys, the NCX, etc, aren't dirt bikes but can handle unpaved hard surfaces in moderation.

The prototype vfr 1200 looks nice but I really don't wanna pay the bucks for the airbag, and traction control. What will a small coliision due blow up your fairing and leave the bike unable to drive?

Not sure about the others, but Dirk Thelen completed the Enduro d'Agadir in Morocco on a nearly stock R1200GS earlier this year and finished 15th out of 100 starters. It is a four day desert race of 683 miles. They basically changed the tires and added an Akrapovic exhaust. The story was published in the July edition of the MOA Owner's News.

Folks scoff at the price of an ST... they'd go unconscious at the 30k and 36k price of the Motus.... No thanks.

Heir apparent (2014 Motus MST and MSTR)? Great video
Never heard of these before, often wondered why a country like the USA isn't producing motorcycles to compete with the leading brands,Harley Davidson excluded.

Strange bike--pushrod v-4 instead of overhead cams.
