This one was given to me by friend, said he could get the title, but that just is not going to happen. So I have started to take it apart and store all parts from it in case I ( or someone else ) needs parts from it. Today I have it ready to pull the motor, clock shows 132,300 or so miles on it. I have had it running, fuel pump is toast. The bank angle sensor is missing and has been bypassed. I think everything else works as it should.

Here is my question, can I pull the motor without pulling the swingarm first?

Thanks, Gary.

The answer is, yes it can be done. Thanks Chris (RCB) for giving me a hand!

The motor:

A look at the timing belt, looks pretty good. Removed the belt and checked the tensioner, water pump, and the other bearings. They all checked out fine, good to know for when I need them.

Looks like it has had a U-Joint and possibly the complete drive shaft replaced before I got it. The shaft and U-joint look new.

Just did not find any Moly paste on the splines. I'm going to order the swingarm pivot tool tomorrow, then pull the swingarm and final drive to see what kind of shape they are in.

Just in case you want to keep going...
You can take off the swing arm with a drift; but, you can't install it with out the tool...

My local Honda dealer said it was available, so it should not take very long. I want to be able to roll it around in the garage till I'm ready to pull the front end, then the swingarm will come off. I'm going to scrap the tires, they look good, but I have no idea how old they are. I'll look for the date codes on them, I might change my mind depends on what I find.

Edit: I picked up the pivot tool today.

I pulled the swing arm and final drive today. For the most part I think everything looks good.

Moly paste is everywhere, so the O-Rings have not been replaced as needed.

All the splines look good.

No play in the final drive from the wheel to drive shaft that I can feel.

Splines inside the cup are good, and inside the drive shaft joint are good. I'm just not sure about the splines on the outside of the drive shaft joint.

Anyone got a picture of a new drive shaft joint to compare with this one?

Next is to pull the front forks off & clean up the brake system.

Gary.

Thanks John, These are the first ones I have seen first hand, so I really did not know what to expect. I'm going to inspect the cush drive rubbers in the rear wheel in the next few days. I hope they are in as good of shape as the other parts.

Most any auto parts store will have 3% moly grease, probably in injector tube form. I'm away from home for a few days yet and don't remember the brand in my garage. The shop manual lists some.

I've bought some 3% moly grease NLGI 2 at a John Deere store - $5. Don't remember the product # though.

The plan is to just go thru the valves / check clearance and record shim size for each valve. I'm not planning on a complete tear down of the motor, just going to use it to practice on. It ran good in the garage after I got it, but have not ridden it. I will try to get pictures as I go thru the valves.

I also pulled the front forks off today. The only thing left in the main frame is the triple tree. I will pull it out later, if I or any one else needs the tree, it will need new head bearings for it. These on it are shot, as they have about three places where they catch and hang up. The fork seals are not leaking, but I will be putting new seals in them anyway, that way they will be ready to go.

This is MUCH better than the chopper build-off, you're gonna have a nice bike when you're done. Can't wait to see it.

Mellow, I am not planning on building a bike with the parts from this 1991 ST1100. I got this one before I bought the 2000 ST1100 I'm riding now. The 1991 was the whole reason I looked for one that ran with a clean title. That way it would be worth messing with since I can't get a title for the 91. I have already used a lot of parts from the 91 on the 2000. I'm hoping to be able to help out others with things they might need as well save some parts for myself. :D

Although I have given some thought to painting all the plastic from the 91 Bright Lime GREEN! I can't help it, I have Kawasaki Lime Green in my veins! :D

That's cool... would be nice to swap out plastic and change colors when you wanted to.. even if it's not a 10-minute job.
