WBGVA FALL RIDE 2013!
Last year a small group of us had the WBGVA FALL RIDE 2012 event in Southern West Virginia (Snowshoe, WV). It was an incredible event with breathtaking fall colors and some of the best roads it has ever been my pleasure to ride. We road all over southern, eastern and central West Virginia for 5 days. We learned a lot and are trying to improve on things by changing the location. Some shortcomings we ran into last year were:
- Lack of restaurant choices within easy reach of the motel.
- No cell phone coverage.
This year we have chosen Moorefield, WV and the South Branch Inn as our home base. It is on the North side of town, just North of Hwy 48, on Hwy 220. They offer a free continental breakfast and adjacent to the motel is a Ponderosa Steak House. There are at least a half dozen other restaurant choices in the town of Moorefield. There is a Walmart, a cinema, and a bowling lanes very near by. The town of Moorefield is located along the South Branch Potomac River, in a valley between some incredibly beautiful mountains.
Like last year, I just can't be satisfied with riding in on Thursday, riding Friday and Saturday, then riding home. So I plan to be there on Wednesday to ride the area Thursday through Saturday. If you have the time and inclination, come join me on Wednesday evening and we will get an early bird start on touring this incredible state at a most beautiful time of year.
Lodging Notes: We have a block of 10 Standard rooms with two twin beds, reserved under "WV-STOC" or "ST-Owners" at a rate of $83 + tax. For Early Birds, we have a block of 5 Deluxe rooms with two queen beds, reserved starting September 25th. Deluxe rooms are $98 + tax. Be sure to ask for the WV-STOC or ST-Owners Group to get the discount applied. The block of rooms will be released on August 25 so make your reservations before then if you want to be in the block. Also, this area has a 'Fall Festival' event that tends to book up all motels in most of WV this time of year. Early reservations are recommended.
Camping Notes: For those that want to camp, there is Riverside Sites and Cabins that is about 3 miles south of town or about 5.5 miles from the South Branch Inn. We will check this out closer this spring and update with more information when it is available.
Camping Update (May 27):
John G. called Steve at Riverside Cabins & campground. It's about 5-6 miles (south) away from the South Branch Inn. They have nice primitive campsites down by the river and they have campsites with electric hookup in the same area where the folks with campers park. All campsites have fire rings and picnic tables. They charge $10 per night per person for tent camping. They also have cabins available if interested. Steve's number is 304-538-6467.
Riding Notes:
- Assuming we have a dozen or more riders attending, we will use the 'Drop and Sweep' aproach to move the group around. I have ridden with this before several times in OH-STOC and BRG. It works great as long as a breadcrumb doesn't abandon their post, and allows for safe riding at your own pace.
- Much of the area we will be riding in is in a 'radio free zone' for the Green Bank Observatory. There will be large parts of the day that we will have NO CELL PHONE COVERAGE. We encourage you to ride conservatively on these roads as emergency help will NOT be a cell phone call away for much of the ride.
