Hi,
I am thinking about buying these Pilot Road 3 Michelins, but have seen others use the 160/60-17, the 170/60-17. There is also a 180/55-17 size. How does the diameter of this size compare to the stock 160/70-17? Is there enough room width-wise for the 180/55-17 to fit my old 1991 ST1100? The michelin website does not list width nor diameter of the various tire sizes.

I'm curious as well. I'd love to try the pr3's but I would really hate to make the bike stand up even straighter than it already does on the side stand with a smaller tire. I think the lack of lean contributed to the tip over I had.

yes
I put the 170/60 on mine....plenty of side clearance.....
The tire lowers the bike about .4"........the side stand is no problem, nor is the center stand....
I would be leery of the 180, as that width might prove dangerous with the rim width.

Have fun!

Being a smaller dia. tire you need to watch how you park. It will stand more vertical and be prone to being pushed over. I actually too about an inch out of my side stand to get the lean back. That is the only down side, the PR2 and PR3 will put a smile on your face.

This is what I have heard and am concerned about. I don't really want to hack up my side stand though. Maybe I need to watch eBay and find one to butcher so I can have the best of both worlds!

Folks have run 170/60 for years (I've done it a couple of times) on ST1100s, but there can be the side stand issue and it's a little harder to get up on the centerstand. With the sidestand, a lot depends on how much play you have in it (the wear factor) as to how straight it stands up.

Don sent a PM asking about the shortening and it made me realize I was thinking about the shorter car tire. I had the same issue with a PR,,just not as bad as with the CT. The fix is the same but an inch may be too much. I would put the side stand down and hold the bike vertical. look at the space under the foot and let it down. Visualize what a half inch off would do and go from there. Hopefully you have a welder who will do it for a reasonable price in case adjustments need to be done.
