Nice bike but I also want shaft drive. I'd rather pay up front than $200+ for chain & sprockets every year (at my typical mileage). I'd also like to eliminate the possibility of the kind of chain failure my klr had, with over $1500 in damaged parts (not counting the actual chain or sprockets).

Cruise would be nice for the reasons others pointed out. The typical DL spends most of the time on the road anyway, might as well make it happier there.

The crosstourer is shaft driven,a chain drive is messy.also the single sided swing arm is very handy for tyre replacement. I think if I was going to pay out that kind of cash I'd take the crosstourer, but test rides needed on both.

The Crosstourer is the heaviest ADV bike available.

Yes just been reading up on them,600lbs roughly. new vstrom 1000 around 500lbs.the shaft drive and bigger engine I suppose adds the weight. Just seen there is an ex demo bike for sale about 100 miles from me so when I'm able I'll go see it and get a test ride.around ?2000 off the new price with 5k miles done.

Had a test ride today on an 07 vstrom GT 1000,liked it instantly, ergonomics are perfect for me. there was a major growl/rattle pulling away in first and second gear, not sure if that's typical of the v twin.felt fun to ride, something I am not getting on the ST1100,despite her being in near perfect condition now with the suspension sorted.
Plenty of power, very comfortable, luggage is flimsy and brakes are weak though. If the new bike has these issues sorted I might just sell both my Hondas and go for one,we only live once after all.

Went to an open evening at my local Suzuki dealer last night. I'm a previous owner of the old Vstrom 1000 gt so was interested to see it.

It looks nicer in the flesh, than in the photo's. It's quite small compared to something like the crosstourer, it's only 14kg (30'ish lbs) heavier than the 650 vstrom.

The price over here is pitched lower than the competition adv bikes, but you can tell it. Chain drive, and you don't get anything bar the basic bike, everything is additional, and some of the accessories are quite expensive, so the price could quickly have you $1500+ on top of the bike price.

Overall, it's ok. But I wouldn't chop my 11 yr old Pan 1300 in for one.

This continues to be my response to the new bike options out there. Plenty are really nice but there's just something about an ST (and a Versys), both set up the way I like, both long since paid for.

Nice bike but seems like a steep price for a basic chain drive adventure bike. $800 less than the Super Tenere with shaft drive? Easy choice there.

Except $14,790 Yamaha - $12,699 Suzuki = $2091 difference. Where are you coming up with $800?

The Strom also weighs 76 pounds less -- a savings of $27.41 per pound!
