I'm working a new job that is temporary, but may end up permanent. I have to commute about 125 miles a day. I'm making good money, well worth the drive, but to minimize my expenses and give me an excuse for a new toy that I really want, I was considering a used Wee as a commuter bike. Most of the drive is on secondary roads so something with a decent suspension and good fuel mileage would be beneficial.

I'm curious what the real-world MPG figures are for the Wee on secondary roads- 40-60mph. I would be keeping the ST for highway trips and longer rides. I've seen numbers from mid 40s to upper 50s. Just curious what the real numbers are.

I get about 50mpg just doing my local riding around here. That is with out panniers. If you push the bike to 75+ then the mileage drops off as that 650cc V twin motor is turning the rpms. I can get about 250 to 260 miles per tank depending on my right wrist.

Too bad the NC700X isn't that cheap on the used market yet. On those roads at those speeds 70-75 mpg easy peasy and a really fun ride. You could ride it as hard as you want between 40 and 60 and easily get those numbers.

Not cheap, but not bad. Still more than the $3k I can easily find a nice Wee for.

Chuck, that sounds just about perfect. The highest speed limit on my commute is 55mph and that is just for a short stretch. Mostly 40-50mph. I might occasionally take other routes home but I still would rarely see highway riding. 250 miles would be a perfect 2-day commute per tank.

How much do adventure panniers affect mileage? I'd probably install some for weekend runs around New England, but I could always use just a top box for commuting.

My '06 gets 60+ mpg at a constant 40 mph and about 54-55 mpg at a constant 60. It stays in the 50's until about 70-75 (corrected) mph. The newer 2012+ get even better mpg.

With what you are telling me you should get between 55 and 60. Add panniers and it will drop off a bit. I took a 3000 mile trip on mine with large Givi Combo Panniers and got about 47 to 50 at sub 65 mph anything higher and the milage dropped off to about 45. Of course I was loaded with camping gear and I was running with a top box also. I am running a 15 tooth sprocket as I take mine off the pavement from time to time. As said, you could go to a 16 tooth for the highway, that will drop your RPM about 500 and give you a bit better milage..

Driving the 05 Wee I had each day to work, 12 miles hwy @65 and 5 miles city each day. It would avg. 55 with a top box. That's just tooling around, not hammer down.

At 55mpg average it would save me $65 a month over my ST. Not enough to pay for itself, but enough to warrant the expense since I have wanted one anyway. Compared to the truck I'm currently driving I'd save $377 a month. Definitely worth using a bike over a truck. I'm already looking into a used VW TDI for the winter months. Of course if this ever becomes a permanent gig I'll move closer, unless the woman I just started seeing turns into something serious...then my commute would grow by 15 miles a day, but in a different direction.

I was getting a steady 51-52 mpg with mixed riding, two lanes and running her pretty hard in the twisties. Since I installed the Solobox panniers it has dropped to 48-49 mpg with the same type of riding. Runs on there slab at 75-80 drops my mileage down to 45 mpg+/-. My last bar starts flashing about the 240 mile mark fairly consistently.

I get 50-55 on most tanks. However, heading home from NATSTOC last summer at 80 mph into a strong wind, it dropped to 35.

My 2011 Wee gets a consistent 52MPG pretty much everywhere I go, from stop and go city traffic to highway up to 70MPH. Above 75 the mileage starts to drop off.

When I had my '06 I consistently got 63-65 mpg on my day trips. Of course our gallon is bigger than yours..... 52-53 USmpg. My new-to-me '11 hasn't really turned a wheel yet........

My 2013 Glee is getting 52-58....depending on traffic. This is with a top box, as I don't put on my side cases for around town trips.

My '06 with pans, top box and windstrom screen averaged high 40's unloaded and behaving, low 40's when loaded and playing with enthusiasm.

Do you guys use corrected to actual mileage figures or use the stock odometer readings?

Don't forget to compare insurance costs and tire costs, too. And, the Wee runs fine on regular unleaded instead of premium.

As long as I was on the back roads, I could flog Wee as hard as I wanted to and I would average about 50-53 mpg. Reportedly, by my local riding cohorts, I was faster through the corners on the Wee than with the ST. And you can take gravel shortcuts! :D

I find that my '09 wee has about the same range at my '04 ST13. That's with about a 1 gallon smaller fuel capacity than the ST13. YMMV.
