so after getting sick of the smell of coolant all the time and my dad (supraSabre) and i talking about all the leaks that happen with these motors. decided it was time to start dealing with these leaks, so i ordered Gates thermoplastic clamps. IMG_1163.JPG

GATES329151/2 to 11/16 (4) Gates 32929 1 1/16 to 1 3/16 (4) Gates 32922 13/16 to 15/16 (2) Gates 32934 1 5/16 to 1 1/2 (1)

these are the sizes i ordered didnt do all the larger radiator hoses, just the one spot under the throttle body's. i also ordered new hoses for radiator, short L hoses and the o-rings. I also went to napa and got 1/4 and 5/16 high presser hose clamps. IMG_1156.JPG

so after putting the thermoplastic clamps on and using a heat gun to heat them up IMG_1165.JPG

i also replaced the plastic tee with a brass one 1/4 one i picked up at autozone. IMG_1203.JPG i replaced the 5/16 that leads to the radiator with 1/4 hose.

IMG_1195.JPGnew hoses and the clamps

IMG_1197.JPGthis is before i heated them all up

IMG_1201.JPG this is them after they are heated up.

IMG_1202.JPG all ready to put all back together.

so after i started it and let it run for a few mins i ended up with one leak, it was on the hose that is to the front of the motor where i put the clamp, i used a 5/16 and really should of been a 1/4 one. after replacing it i ran the bike for 30 mins and rode it and no leaks so far. in time we will know more....

Well I sure hope those clamps work for you, I have never seen them installed on any bike before. My only concern with them is what do you do if they have a leak? Replace them? So did your extended warranty take care of this for you? :D

well since everytime the bike warms up they should hold tighter i hope i dont have a leak, if u do end up with one then u have to cut them off and replace them, but when i was looking into the clamps i couldnt find a story of people having the clamps leaking on them. no extended warranty was able to be used, my dad wouldnt pay for me so i had to.

here is time frame and cost.

so the clamps cost was about 30 bucks (rockauto) for the thermoplastic ones, (from napa) the smaller 5/16 and 1/4 high pressure was about 15.00 i got 6 ft of 10mm hose and 6 ft of 6mm hose but i didnt have to do one 3 ft that goes from front of motor to oil filter area, that was about 20bucks. the coolant was 13.00 the (autozone)tee was 3.00 and the factory hoses and 2 orings where about 37.00 from partszilla. but shipping took over a week for them.

so about 100. bucks, and time frame could be done on a saturday, if u have all the parts ready, i pulled it apart to see what was happening and then ordered items.

thats a little steep for a bike that has been down... ;)
All new parts, only about 20K miles, so I'm not worried about it! Besides, it's not a salvage title.

Only possible draw back, might be the speedo I put on it! ;)

And don't forget, that '05 went down almost six years ago... what issues have you found on it from the accident?

I find that snugging the clamps during the major services takes care of coolant leaks.

I will be interested to see how these thermo clamps hold up over time, I used the Breeze constant-torque clamps when I did mine, they are holding up well after 4 years in service now.

They will last longer than the hose. They were designed for cold water leaks in heavy duty fleet applications.

Looks good Justin. Would like to hear how they've held up in a year or two--I expect they'll do well, and it is nice how clean the install looks when done.

To mike's point, if one develops a leak while on the road... getting access to it is the challenge, not the clamp itself.

They're usually used where speed of maintenance is an issue and where they are readily accessed -- not necessarily where they're expected to be in service for a long time in places that are very difficult to access. Hence, they've gotten good inroads into fleet applications.

While I do expect them to perform well, they are thermoplastic after all, and thermoplastics degrade over time and with exposure to chemicals, unlike steel clamps. I'm not a polymer / thermoplastics scientist and I don't know how these may degrade (whether relaxing or embrittling) over the long haul--but there will be some level of degradation, possibly less degraded than the rubber, possibly more.

yeah i hope they hold up for some time. i dont really want to have it apart again anythime soon, and a good test on them will be the 3k i will be putting on them with my dad in sept. https://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?136219-A-Ride-of-a-Lifetime-Coming-Up!

so i will see how they handle on that ride.

I've tried that numerous times when the airbox was removed and I could never get them all! I'm done playing with these stupid clamps. Just ordered enough of the thermoplastic clamps to do 5 bikes! :D

It's easy with the radiator and frame cross member removed.

At least, once I get them back together, I won't have to remove anything, other than change the coolant every couple of years! :D
I remove the radiator to do this service. How do you change your coolant?

As long as all I'm doing is changing the coolant, remove and flush out the radiator and then try to get the rest out anyway I can.
