Re: New tool

Same I guess as the old school trick of a pc of 35mm film. I've also heard of cutting up a pc of milk jug with a hook that looks like that tool.
I'm trying to figure out how to guilt rulbe into a tech day forkorama :D

Actually Carl it was Randy that suggested I try this first I did ask him about doing the seals. Thanks Jim they have a deal 2 for $7.99 and $2.45 shipping seemed like it was worth a try. My seals aren't that old so if I can clean them and it works no need to take her all apart.

Re: New tool

A little more convenient than the 35mm film.
Since find spare leader from 35mm film is getting harder these days. The clear plastic that is used as blister pack over something you buy works as a good substitute.

Glad it worked for you I had used the 35MM film negative with good results recently. I have had my seals fail and when I removed them found a small split in both upper and lower seals. Good luck

Yep, a SealMate sealed a leaking fork on my '92 ST. I bought a 5 pack and gave all but one away.

I keep one in my on-bike tool kit.

Yes I have used Seal Mate successfully and it worked great. But I will say that my circumstances were most likely different. I rebuilt a set of forks, new seals and the works. when I got them back together and rode a few mile one fork leg was leaking. I used the seal mate and it did the job. I might have had some dirt or something in the seal.

I use my expired State Farm Insurance cards. I cut them w/ a scissors in the shape of the Sealmate. A thin piece of plastic sheet will work as well.

This is an old dirt bikers fix for dirt in the seals.

Jim, owner of TFOG Wheelsports in Golden CO (my favorite tire store), told me the primary cause of fork seal failure in street bikes is insects smashed onto the forks.......they rub against the seals & this causes the leak.

I check the forks surfaces before each ride.

Cool! Ordered some. That should do the trick. The previous owner had just worked on the forks and so it stands to reason it's something simple like this.
Thanks to Trike flyer for the link. Perfect!

Is this supposed to go between the fork seal and the fork tube? Watching the video it seemed like it was just on top of the seal.

Think of it as floss. I had issues getting it between the seal and tube but once I got it in it worked.

I use my Progressive insurance card. You definitely want to pop the dust seal to clean out the crap/oil under it.
