took her out for a few miles and shes running... Ok. Surging as the revs climb or if I crank it, so pretty sure I still need to go through the carbs.... But for now she's running and I'm a very patient man 
Uncle Phil, not sure about the fuel pump, but I'm going to source one and swap it out. Looks like if it's not the problem it may well be sooner or later.
And I'm going to keep the starter fluid with me when I'm riding; kind of a talisman ;-)
