03 ST1300 engine swap

Bought a project ST today that needs a little work. Engine has a bad bottom end knock. Any advise or tips on engine removal would be greatly appreciated.

Cylinder 1 no compression. Plug took a beating from piston.

I agree on buying a replacement engine. There is one on eBay with 1204 miles that is new. it is $799 plus shipping. You cannot do a proper rebuild with parts for that. Not when pistons and rings are a $110 plus and you need four and everything else that you may or may not know..

Now from a science project it may be fun to build one if you want to learn and spend money.

If the piston was hitting the plugs either to long of plug was used or there are serious bottom end problems as you stated above.

ST1300 engines are too cheap (on ebay) to even think of rebuilding one!

I'm buying one from eBay. But I'm going take the other one apart to part it out.

Take a few pictures and post them as you restore it...projects are always fun to watch and besides, it will give you the history on it if the buyer ever wonders what all you did to it and wants some kind of proof! :D

Once you remove the swing arm, place a car jack under it and take the weight off the frame, unhook all the wire connectors and I bet it will slip right out....:)

Only 48,000. PO said it hadn't been ridden in 2 years. Bike ran ok except for the knock. I'm going to drop it out tonight and disassemble it in the next few days.

When you select a replacement engine, I'd stay away from anything showing actual engine damage...

I know the engine I bought several years ago had something go through the front case. If I ever get to the point of putting it back in service, I need to pull the pan to make sure I get all the bits and pieces out of it.:eek:4:
