The GPS function in the camera puts the latitude and longitude of where the photo was taken into the EXIF information of the JPEG file for each picture taken. All smartphones that have a camera and GPS do the same thing.

The GPS in most point and shoot cameras does consume a lot of battery. They are also "slow" so you may find that the GPS location is off from the actual picture location, particularly if you are "moving fast".

I use a Garmin GPSmap 62s to geocode all my pictures rather than the GPS in the camera. Just have to sync the camera clock with the GPS. Much more accurate and the rechargeable NiCAD batteries last all day. Also I am not sharing my location unknowingly on Facebook etc...
