Maybe you should come back, rent a truck, and take my 97 with you. She only has 57K on her.
I am starting to feel like I will not get it back on the road.

That would make for a fun project!

All she needs is time, a fairing stay and plastic. I thought I would paint it with Plastidip. Got most of the plastic and stay.

Well, STill waiting on parts. But was able to disassemble. The o-rings and oil seal are not pictured.

Use a 2 3/16" socket for covering the u-joint for removing/installing the cotters. I just securely rigged the bottom of the shaft with blocks for compressing. Worked excellently.

Use A 1 9/16" socket for installing the oil seal.

Nice work John, it sure is nice to have access to proper tools. Life will become harder when I retire and leave the shop.

I have my bike down to final drive. I am pulling the driveshaft joint. Question: Is there some play in the drive shaft joint?

Be sure to pull the Driveshaft Joint out of the Final Drive and inspect for wear and lube, John.

How are you going to apply 76 ft lbs to the right pivot bolt using the cold chisel shaft? Or do you have that tool O/O also...?

John
Is there suppose to be play in the driveshaft joint?

I would suppose there would be play there, since there is a spring on the driveshaft pressing against it. Thus the wear in the driveshaft joint cap that is produced over time.

Well, all the parts arrived today, EXCEPT the u-joint! Doh!
I was hoping to have everything in time for the bridge run. (The bridge run is several riders going up to, and crossing the Mackinac Bridge, have lunch, and ride back. Prolly a little more than 10 hours ride from STurgis.)

Well, I didn't fall off the face of the Earth, but was delayed in putting my bike back together. She is done! Over the course of the last couple days I reinstalled the new u-joint and driveshaft joint along with fresh greases, as per the manual and John O's advice on related threads. Took her out for a quick spin and it feels awesome! The vibrations I was feeling beforehand are gone. Rides so smooth!

I haven't ridden the bike since Sept of 2014, right when this thread stopped. The bike sat in the garage on the battery tender. I started it up a few times during the year and that was all.

Of course she collected a fair amount of dust so she got a quick bath and shine this evening as well. STill a great looking bike!

The new tires are the boss!

Thanks to all earlier in this thread who offered a hand with directions and advice; much appreciated.
