Does anyone know which side panel "Cowl setting bolt", which takes an Allen wrench instead of a Phillips head screw driver, works with an ST1100?

On an earlier ST1100 I owned, those bolts took an Allen wrench (a PO had changed them out) and they were the same bolt Honda used on another model bike--and probably several others-- but I can't remember which bike it was, but I think I remember seeing the info somewhere on the "old" ST list. They took the same size Allen wrench as most of the other cowl fasteners, such as the lower cowl and the engine side panels, which made it very handy to just keep one T handle on the bike. Also, the Allen head bolts were not so prone to disfigurement as were the ones requiring the Phillips screw driver.

The ones listed for the ST1100, even back to the 94 models through 2001, are pn 83641-KY6-000, and they take a Phillips screw driver.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Nice work Ronn, I just knew it was from a blackbird; but, couldn't find an image of the dimpled part to get the partnumber.

Actually a PH#3, the reason their mostly messed up, as folks try to use the "regular" PH#2 on them...

Yes, but the dimpled ones add at least 2mph to your top speed... ;-)

At *least*!
All that turbulent air you know...
That explains golf balls. Those guys will buy anything in hopes of saving a stoke or 2! :D (Yes, I know why golf balls have dimples.)

What was Honda thinking? Every other bolt like that one is hex key head.

You are right. I only have the American Phillips screwdrivers, and not the JIS (?) ones designed for Japanese fasteners. The bolts on my current ST were somewhat disfigured when I got the bike and I want to change them out to the ones the accept Allen wrenches. Now the big decision will be to get the dimpled or non-dimpled, and whether I want the influence of a Blackbird or a VFR on my ST...:)

Thanks for the reply!

Also in JIS you'll find a #1, #2, #3...

Since years we/I are using a Philips #3 on that 83641-KY6-000 OEM bolt and it doesn't get mangled, but I've seen many STs with this bold badly rounded due using a common #2 (like the one in the tool-kit)

You would think it was a JIS, coming from Japan as a tool for a Japanese bike.

I responded to this topic on an older thread but I wanted to add this here too. I just put the dimpled cowl bolts in to replace the chewed up philips screws. Have not verified increased top-end yet.;) Does anybody know if the two bolts that hold the shelter at the top by the steering head have similar replacements? These are also chewed up philips screws. They are not in any direct air flow so it's unlikely any aerodynamic improvements will be seen. It would be nice to be able to use one multi tool hex wench to take off all the plastic rather than grab a philips driver for these odd fasteners.

Then someone had replaced them with just wrong things! ;-) (and I cannot make out where Philips type bolts that could fit in there could be found anywhere on the ST... so their probably sourced from a garage floor then...)
OEM ones are definitely chromed Allen bolts: 90104-MN4-000 SCREW, SPECIAL, 6X19 (plus the rubber grommets: 17227-GS3-000 RUBBER, AIR CLEANER; often shredded to pieces as folks don't care to use silicone spray prior inserting the bolts, so the rubbers get cut to pieces by them bolts...)
And yes, there dimpled ones avail that should fit... but if I where you I'd go for Titanium ones, weight savings and all that ;-)

Well maybe those two top end shelter bolts were replaced with the wrong screws by the PO. They are odd shaped wide head things with a collar that fits the chewed up grommets. I think I'll be stopping by the dealership and ordering new bolts and grommets. I wonder if the local ACE hardware has titanium?
