I'm in the process of gearing up to replace the swing arm bearings. and thinking that while off the bike it would be a good idea to slip off the drive shaft and have a look see. my personal view of such ventures is that even if no problems are found,at a bare minimum, all rubber parts should be replaced. my question is what other parts should be replaced as a matter of reasonable caution? my '98 1100 bike has 80Kmiles and I doubt if the D.S. has ever been out of the bike.

Hello!
I wanted to reply to you yesterday, but I didn't have time right then.
To replace the swing arm pivot bearings, the swing arm has to be pulled and in doing so the drive shaft will come with it. You'll be able to inspect the u-joint easily.
Also, pull out the driveshaft joint from the final gear drive and inspect it.
I'm in the process right now of doing this on my '01. I'll update here with the url and you can visit the thread if you like. Members have been assisting me with the project and you can get some information there.
