Life of the ST1300 Engine

I've just had a bad experience buying a bike off of cycle trader from a out of state dealer. When I went to register the bike I learned that the bike I bought was a former CHP bike and the mileage was much more than stated as true mileage. The dealer was very accommodating and refunded my money back immediately.

I ended up finding a 2006 ST1300A locally with 60k miles on it. The dealer is asking $5999. First question is does that seem like a reasonable price and second question is does 60k miles seem to high or are these engines known to last?

Thanks,
Jerry

There are many examples on this forum of ST1300 with over 100,000 miles. I personal have 128000 on my ST1300. No engine problems except a leaky water pump at 80k. Still on the original clutch. There are a few examples of over 200,000 mile STs out there and I even heard of one with 300,000 miles. To answer your question 60k miles is about right for a 2006 model. 10k a year is nothing. These machines were made to run.

I would check Kelley Blue Book as well as listings on the site for bikes for sale. That said, it doesn't hit me as a particularly good deal.

Kelly Blue Book (or any other used bike valuation) is a starting point. Local demand, seller's need for cash, accessories, and the condition of the bike will adjust these 'suggested retail prices' upwards or down. And don't forget the buyer's ability to negotiate. If you're buying a bike, might be a good idea to hire a good horse trader or used camel salesman to negotiate on your behalf. Seriously, there are books out there on how to buy a car and a lot of the ideas in there are good for buying any big ticket item - houses, cars, boats, motorcycles, etc. Me? I let my wife do the negotiating and I just pay the bills.

My ST has over 124000 miles and other then coolant hoses and thermostat replacement, two clutch switches, two sets of fork seals, one secondary master cylinder which were taken care of by the warranty there have been no other issues with the bike. I would also look in the classified section here and talk to the person who owned the bike before which you can get a feel for the bike better then at a dealership. Good luck with your hunt for the right bike.

Thanks for the input! Does the price seem on point?
Here an example of an 06 ABS in an adjacent state with almost the same miles:

You might try other searches on Search Tempest.

Looking at NADA for a 2006 ABS and the Craigslist posting above, the $5999 looks to be in the ball park for the year model if the bike is in good condition. Given that it is a dealer, remember that the $5999 is an asking price. They'll probably take less if you hammer on them about the mileage.

Be sure to know about farkles... and what you might like. Some of the accessories (primarily trunk) can be found already installed for a lot less money then you will spend if you do it later.

My first bike I thought was a good deal, was bone stock.
Second bike was a sweeter deal as it was nicely optioned. Seat, windscreen, trunk, throttle lock, bar riser, cb/radio, etc...

Personally, I would jump at a local 2006 ABS ST1300 for $6,000. First, ABS versions are hard to find. Second, it is local. Third, 60,000 miles is nothing in terms of usage.

The bike has Hyperlites on it now. I personally have motolites, GPS, and Skene P3's on hand from another bike that will go on whatever I choose to get.

Yeah, but when you get above 180K watch out for that starter switch! :)

I wondered where you were at on that thing. I plan to beat you to 200, just so you know. But winter is fast approaching and my riding is far more restricted than yours when that happens. That and my bike is 12 years older, been crashed a few more times and is one of 2 that I own...so it gets left home once in a while.

I am now at 184,200.
Hey Justin! Now, don't think isn't serious!

I tried to beat her to, I think it was, 150K, but she beat me....(I think I was putting miles on the '04 too, at the time - can't remember) So you might need to get out there and put more than that 10K that you did over the last year! ;)

For comparison sake, I bought a 2006 in April for $5,000.00 with a Givi trunk, MCL highway pegs, Sonic fork with the MCL fork brace, MCL risers and Ram mounts, new windscreen, and some driving lights installed on the forks. The bike had 58,000 miles when I bought it and has 69,000 now. The only thing I've done is wired everything correctly and change the oil. I've done three Saddle Sore 1,000 this year and have never worried about anything going wrong.

I have over 100K on an 06 ABS and the motor is doing fine. There is some significant evidence that Honda power plants last longer than the rest of the bike. Some CX-500's from the 1980's are running around with well over 350K or greater miles.

I agree with Scott, while I have seen some that have been wrecked, or poorly maintained, I have not seen or heard of one that has any significant decrease in performance solely due to mileage. If I know the owner and the mtce, I would have no fear with a 60K ST at all.

Yep, you should have ridden it down for our trip, instead of carting it down in your truck! That would have doubled your mileage...;)

I found KBB, Nada, and MCN used bike values to all be higher than bikes were selling for when I bought my ST1300A. I used the want ads on here and Motorcycle Trader to beat up the dealer on price when I bought mine. Plus, you're shopping at the best time of year to buy a bike.
