"Triumph unveiled four new Tiger 800 variants today at EICMA 2014 – the XR/XRx, and the XC/XCx. The former favor a more road-going bias with occasional light-duty off-roading, while the latter flip the script and prefer dirt to pavement. As standard fitment, all four models receive traction control, ABS and ride-by-wire throttle. XRx and XCx models come fitted with cruise control (the first in its segment) and three riding modes which enable the rider to control throttle response, traction control and switchable ABS. Further, XC models come equipped with WP suspension for greater off-road ability (Showa components adorn XR models). In the engine bay, all four Tigers are powered by the existing 800cc Triple.

However, Triumph claim a 17% increase in fuel economy over last year, jumping to 65 mpg vs. 55 mpg.

The lowercase “x” versions indicate the more premium versions of their respective models, which provide greater adjustability of the electronics. On non-x models, ABS and traction control can only be turned on or off, while the x bikes have the ability to customize settings via the different ride modes. For example, choosing the off-road setting disables rear wheel ABS for better stopping ability off the pavement, while TC allows greater slip in the rear compared to Road mode, which off-road riders obviously prefer.

I wonder how they got the 10mpg increase....must have less HP.

I think it gained 1 HP. I think the increase in mpg came from "better" electronics, ride by wire, etc.

Interesting stuff. Total weight and seat height, tho.

Motorcycles, unlike cars and light trucks, do not have to report fuel economy using a uniform set of standards like the US EPA's CAFE standards. However, the EPA testing methodology for exhaust emissions, the FTP, does give a figure for MPG and Harley Davidson uses this in model specifications. The Japanese motorcycle manufacturers have a uniform standard, the WMTC, that stems from a United Nations effort to harmonize reporting standards worldwide. There could be large differences in the numbers reported by either method with the WMTC being more stringent.

I believe the better fuel economy for the 2015 (2nd generation Tigers?) to be a result of slightly better engine management due to the new ride by wire system, although its driveability seems to suffer slightly if the Trophy and Explorer RBW systems are examined, and using the best numbers reported by either the FTP or WMTC methodologies. Probably the former because Triumph does not use the term WMTC in the claims. Honda does use the WMTC method and references it in model specifications.

Of the upgrades I think I would like the factory cruise the most, of course I just bought a 2014 Tiger roadie, now called XR, that does not have it.

I think the WP suspension should be standard on all of them. Wonder what the price difference will be for the XRx/XCx...

Bob Barker says the price is right, come on down. I have to take a long hard look at at this one. The spoked wheels have tubes right? Or are they the tubeless type?

Seems like all the more compelling reason for Yamaha to target this segment with a smaller Tenere or something similar - The XC/XCx looks great, but I wish they stuck to just the XR & XC models and made all the extra '-x' stuff standard :( :( :(

The XC versions have tubes on spoked rims. I liked the XC version more but that was a deal breaker for me and I bought a road version with cast wheels.

Triumph is certainly doing a nice job.

I saw Padden's and I thought it was a spoke, tubeless wheel. I liked the fact that you could torque the hex head spokes to true the circumference. Was that a different model Triumph?

Tom has a 1200 Explorer, different model from the 800 discussed here.

I agree. Tubes are a pain. I'm too old for the hard core off road stuff.

I run these in my KTM wheels. I know on the ADV site some guys are using them in the adventure bikes.
