2015 Radar Detector Thoughts / Opinions

I finally pulled the trigger on an escort 9500ix from Amazon warehouse deals. Its a damaged box item but I got it for $304 which is like $70 less than what the "new" ones are. It's the one with the blue display and while I'd prefer the red one, I wasn't willing to pay more for it. I already purchased a "radar box" from legal speeding to put it in and I'll either mount the box in the center of my dash or I'll put it on a ram mount. My ST has balls! Ram balls that is... Everywhere so I can decide where is the best place for the radar box. I want to make a water proof "smart cord" type control box to mount under my dash to have a mute button, power switch, and alert lights available without compromising the waterproof box where the detector will live. I have a schematic of the smart cord, I'm going to get my buddy to wire it up for me as he is much better at that type of work than me!

Just wondering , do police get pissed at someone having a radar detector obviously mounted on their bike and make it even more rough on you ? experiences ?

I've never been pulled over while running a detector however, everyone I know who has says that you are guaranteed a ticket if your pulled over for speeding with a detector. I'm hoping that it doesn't happen however, I plan on turning off the detector if I do get pulled over and hopefully the cop doesn't know what is inside the box. (Insert "seven" movie reference..."what's in the box???)

If the detector doesnt save my Bacon, it allows me to watch for the cop to make his move and pull over early enough to remove the detector.

You could probably 'bury' it in the bodywork or mount it under the headlight like I do on my ST1100s.

So what tipped the balance for your to go with the GPS 9500ix?

The only two detectors I was seriously considering were the Redline and the 9500ix and I think ultimately it came down to price. I was able to get the 9500ix for $100 less than the Redline. I also like the GPS capabilities of the 9500 because I am headed to Florida in March and they are notorious for their red light cameras.

Any cop who has been working radar or Lidar enforcement for more than 1.721 days will know when his device is being jammed. Poof- probable cause to pull you over and tear apart your bike looking for it. I'll pass.

During radar certification, it only took 2 seconds to find out that a jamming system was being used. And yes, this is definitely probable cause which could lead to your bike being impounded. Not a very good idea. I would rather pay the ticket. On a side note, for non laser jamming equipment, lots of highway patrol or state troopers have Radar detector detectors or Spectre (VG-2) that can notify them that you have a radar detector. It makes it even easier for them to write a ticket if you get busted by a RDD.

I was a master instructor when I retired and our Lasers had a jamming indicator on them too boot. All modern radars and lasers are instant on and off so a good operator will get a vehicle with a detector/jammer 9 times out of 10. Where I live they are illegal and it gives us the grounds to search anywhere on the vehicle, not put the vehicle back together after we search and not responsible for any legitimate damage we might cause searching.

If you mount it under the headlights of a 1300,it better be real thin. Probably better to mount it behind the fairing on top of the headlight.

Also, radar waves are not in the visible light spectrum. So transperant materials to the front is not really necessary.

I spent about $10 or $15 to water proof my V1 and bluetoothed it to my Sena SMH10 via an SM10 transmitter. The headset/bluetooth transmitter combo was not horribly expensive but the best thing about it was that I don't have to fight with a bunch of thin wires that are apt to break or short out while on a trip. HERE's how I waterproofed the V1 and HERE's how I hooked it all up to bluetooth helmet speakers.

On the subject of radar detector detectors, the Escort Redline and Escort Passport Max are invisible to RDD's. I don't frequent virginia or DC so I really wasn't concerned about that capability.

My st1300 came with one part of a radar detector, it is a little dash indicator that was tucked away in one of the tiny cubbie-holes just below the windscreen. One set of wires went to the battery and the other (which was telephone wire) went to a Ram mount. It took about an hour to remove it but it is still in one piece. It had several LEDs and a button...I think it was a Passport. I'll gladly send it too anyone for price of shipping. I can post a pic upon request.

Here is a pic of the gadget I took off of my bike. As I mentioned it has a pair of wires (Pos & Neg) that went to the battery and another wire (that looks like a telephone wire) that went to a RAM mount. I will ship it to anyone for the cost of shipping.

Yep, that's the 12v plug in to power the radar detector. This was sold as optional because the passport was battery powered. The telephone cord plugs into the side of the radar detector.
