Maybe you guys can help me out here and let me know if I got a good deal or not...

I just purchased a used Motorcycle? cruise control for $400. It was working when it came off of an 2007 ST1300. It is missing the magnets but I understand that I can get those either from the manufacturer or maybe even a source that sells rare-earth magnets. This is pretty close to the same price as a new Rostra CC ($175) + GL1800 Back-lit Switch Assembly ($175) + Pulse Divider ($30-$50?). I am taking a pretty big risk, but assuming it works it should be much easier. Honestly I combed through every post of every thread here discussing the AudioVox/Rostra/Motorcycle? cruise controls and felt more comfortable with an installation that was much easier. I couldn't afford or justify the price of a new one but was able to find a used one.

So did I get a good deal? And for those of you who have Motorcycle? cruise controls, is there any things I need to replace while it is off the bike? I read something about an o-ring associated with the vacuum canister?!? I'm crossing my fingers and squinting my eyes as I wait to find out if I struck out, made it to first, or hit a home run... Thanks again, doug

Not sure you can get an Audiovox clone from Murphs kits brand new for under $200 I think. I Just did the Audiovox install I had help but it wasn't hard following the instructions on the forum. It took us a bit of time total was probably a bit over 8 hours.

Is this one the MC Cruise variety from Australia? You can source the magnets in the US but I don't remember which one of these worked -

Products:
------------------------------------------------------
36 x 3/16 in x 1/4 in Thick, Grade N42, Rare Earth Neodymium Cylinder (ND009-1) = $6.12
36 x 3/16 in x 3/16 in Thick, Grade N42, Rare Earth Neodymium Cylinder (ND008) = $5.76

from Magnet4less.com (if they are still in business). This was for the ST1100 so I'm not sure the size would be right for ST1300. I presume you have the pickup, the brain, the handlebar control, the Vacuum canister and the wiring harness?

I installed one of those units about 10 years ago and love it. Worked great from day one and it still does. Once you've got the manuals, they'll help answer a lot of your questions. Looks like Phil has already given you a link to the magnets. Take your time with the installation. I was in a hurry when I did my first install in crunched one of the lines.

Good luck with the installation. I think you'll like it a lot.

If you go to the Murphs kits website, you will see this:
[h=1]Offline for Maintenance[/h] [h=2]Murphs' Kits is temporarily offline for maintenance. Please excuse all the dust and code flying around. If you have created a Murphs' Kits account, products previously added to the shopping cart have been saved for delayed checkout.

We plan to return online: 11/19/2014 12:00:00[/h]
There is also a note that they will respond to enquiries within 24 hours. Their email address is at the bottom of that page.

With the issues... I'm just wondering if buying a used and undocumented MC specific cruise is really saving any time over adapting a generic cruise.

But sometimes my mind wanders... :think1:

sounds like you got a fair deal. the McCruise is pricy but mine worked very well while I had it. the install of it is much easier than the 2-Rostra and 2-Audiovox I have installed. they are mode for cars and so the install takes some time. but in the end they work as well as the McCruise for much less $$$ I have not done the goldwing switch mod. it looks very nice but I did not think it was worth the cost for me
anyway the magnets should not be hard to come by and I see others have helped with that.
contact McCruise and they are great to deal with. they will get you manuals via email
good luck with the install

One of mine was used and it was no trouble to install - but then I'd already installed two on my other two ST1100s. :D

I got the cruise control in today and hoping to do the install this weekend...can someone give me some direction on where I can get the magnets?

The instructions list them as being 6mm diameter by 4.5mm length.

Someone here suggested a supplier, but they were $3 each. That's $18 plus shipping and they probably won't get here by Friday.

If I can order from Amazon and get some that are Prime eligible, they'll be about $6 no shipping and be here by Thursday. The problem is, I haven't found the magical size. How close do they need to be to that size?

I'm guessing that the metric measurement had less to do with exact size than with the fact that they are coming from Australia (read: they don't use inches)!

Any suggestions?

They have to fit inside the allen heads on the disc for a ST1100 and would assume the same for ST1300.

6mm X 4.5MM is about 1/4 Inch x 3/16 Inch - notice I said 'about'. ;-)

From my First Post -

Products:
------------------------------------------------------
36 x 3/16 in x 1/4 in Thick, Grade N42, Rare Earth Neodymium Cylinder (ND009-1) = $6.12
36 x 3/16 in x 3/16 in Thick, Grade N42, Rare Earth Neodymium Cylinder (ND008) = $5.76

IIRC, I bought both just in case one didn't work and I don't remember which ones I used. It's more of an issue of width than length as you can adjust the Hall sensor farther away from the disc if they are little too long. But if they are too thick, they won't fit in the bolt heads. But again, this is for ST1100 and I don't know about ST1300 sizes.

Ok, 6mm is about 1/4" (.01" wider) so I got them in that diameter. However, Amazon did not have them in 3/16" length do I went up to 1/4" since you said the Hall sensor can be adjusted.

So, I got (20) 1/4" x 1/4" magnets shipped for $8...they should be here by Thursday. Hopefully they will fit! Thanks for the help. doug

Doug - The distance between the magnets and the Hall Sensor is about 1/8 IIRC. Easiest thing to do is get a 1/8" drill bill which will 'stick' to the magnets, then adjust the Hall Sensor on the metal bracket to it. Tony (from MCCruise) told me the gap is not that critical so approximate is good enough. ;-) I got the 1/4" and the 3/16" diameters because I wasn't sure which one would fit and now I don't remember which one did. :D
