Headset lower bearing race replace or repack....

My eBay headset socket arrived today and was promptly put to use removing the nut.

After cleaning off copious amounts of grease I discover some slight impressions in the lower race.



The balls in the cage seem to be blemish free, as does the upper bearing set.

Should I simply order the bearings or would there be any problems if I just repacked the existing bearings.

Just finished cleaning out the upper lower race, and it's got a nice wear groove...so most definitely time to replace.

Get the tapered roller bearings. Might as well do it right; it's no more difficult.

That is what I replaced mine with also, works great.

tapered roller bearings, more solid feel

New tapered bearings were on my desk at work after lunch.

Waiting on the toolkit - which (according to the UPS website) should arrive at my house this afternoon.

Therefore, I will hopefully remove the old and install the new bearings and rebuilt forks (fresh oil and 1.2 kg/mm Sonic springs) back on the bike tonight.
