I'm about to swap out the plugs in my '01 and would like to know if the standard recommended plug suffices, or is there any sense in going to more of a 'performance' plug?

Thanks!

Likely no performance difference, but I went with the Iridium plugs so I won't have to do them again, likely ever (I think the service manual specifies a change of plug every 8K miles).
I haven't checked, but if that 8,000 mile service interval is correct - that's NUTS! OEM can easily last 4X that, quite possibly more. I do mine at 50,000 kms - just because, not that they need it then.

I replaced my OEM plugs with NGK Iridium IX CR8EHIX-9 plugs about 25K miles ago and they're still working great.

That's a precautionary replacement interval...
A ceramic insulator could crack due to thermal and/or mechanical stress, causing a "leak", thus no spark...

I had such once on my prev '92:
Winter, rode from the office like 5 min to a store (some choke use), did my purchase (~10 min), got back out, cranked the engine with ~1/3rd choke, it started with one "cough" (misfire), another 5 minute ride back to the office, stopped the engine and went back to work...
After 2100hrs I finally decided to go home, went out, cranked the engine, wouldn't fire... huh?!
Among other things I checked by pulling the plugs one by one, upon removing #2 the engine suddenly fired on 3 cylinders... reconnecting it: stall... doh! o_O
Apparently the spark-plug had suffered a crack during the misfire above, thus a short to ground...

And now change them darn spark plugs, at night, in the dark, with a refreshing wind at cosy -3?C/25?F... arghhh...

Karen,

Just changing my plugs tonight. Will find out last time i had them changed. I thinkit was 50 k or more ago. Will let you know if it improves anything

Hope this finds you well,

Spark plugs have been on my list of things to change...I just don't seem to remember to do it....

The plugs on my 93 have 115K of MY miles on them, not sure how many the PO put on!

Replaced them last night this morning I had two mechanics look at the old ones both said they looked great! While changing them out I realized i still had 4 new plugs in my parts drawer. So that means it's been 20 K since last change. They were impressed at what they saw.
