Hi everyone,
I have a ST1100 SC26 - 1990, with an engine that consumes oil. I am thinking of changing the engine and I know someone that has a 1992 engine for sale. For me its cheaper changing the engine instead of repairing the old one.
I would like to know if both are compatible? Does the 1992 engine fits in my 1990 ST1100 motorbyke?
Thank you all

I would think it should not present a problem if you know how to do it yourself, if you are paying someone it would probably be cheaper to sell the bike for parts and buy one with a working engine.

If your early model ST1100 has the external crankcase breather chamber like the USA 1991 model year, when you buy the '92 engine be sure it comes with its original water pump, and ask for its crankcase breather hose (water pump to air cleaner).

Both good advises on the matter...

A '90 ST in Portugal might also still lack the PAIR system, whilst a '92 engine will most likely have such, so you need to get that plumbing sorted as well...

And considering the options mentioned: why not go for a way younger engine with a lot less miles?
A post '96 plant would already have the 40A alternator and should still fit your '90 frame just as easy as a '92...

OK , gotta ask these questions : How many miles on the engine ? How much oil are you using ? Is it smoking out the exhaust ? Have you pulled the spark plug ? Are they oily looking ? Is your crankcase breather system working properly ??

I'm asking these questions because maybe you have a problem with your engine that can be corrected easily to reduce your oil consumption without replacing it.

Wouldn't a valve and ring job be cheaper and easier than swapping out the entire engine? (I don't know whats involved in pulling the pistons on an 1100, but they do this in cars more often than swapping the engine.)

the byke have 80000 miles and the spark plugs are oily looking, maybe the pistons need new segments.

maybe, but the engine has 80000 miles and the new one only 13000. It costs me 800 euros (about 900 USD). I doubt that it will be cheaper if I put new segments in the actual engine.

Did you get the carburetors too?

I noted some of the parts on the '93 are different from the '01 (the hoses around the outside of the carb assembly have smaller ID on the '93).

Are all the plugs oily looking ??

If you still have the original engine running in the bike, check the crankcase breather and make sure it isn't clogged-up. If it is , try cleaning it and see if that helps the oil useage problem ( if you are using oil ).

If you fix it, you can always sell the engine you bought.

My bike has 76K miles on it and doesn't burn a drop of oil, to speak of over 5K miles.

It's not uncommon for these engines to go over 250K miles without any work ........ or oil useage.

Have to agree.......mine has 83K barely broke-in miles.......6K between changes(20-50conventional year-round). Level never moves between oil changes. IMO, you got something simpler goin on.....and a whole lot less expensive than an engine puchase and swap;).

$900 USA dollars does not seem all that cheap for an engine. For some reason, engines do not bring high prices.
