there's a label on the steering stem tube of the frame with the month/year of manufacture. I assume that's what you're getting the 6/90 date from on your bike.

Yes, yours was the 27th built, for the North American market, but not necessarily 27th overall

But mine is an Australian model? So 27th in Aust?? I sound stupid asking this. Lol
Yes you have one of the older units, however globally, your has been manufactured later than the 1991 US model year. Confusing? Yes. The date of manufacture plays a role. My 1990 is #65 but built in 02/90 yours I gather was built in 06/90. As I understand it some of the 91 model year was built in 03/90.

How do I know if mines a L or M as both are in the Vin.
The database on CMSNL might give some hints http://www.cmsnl.com/
In [Search Model] select [Honda] as brand
an additional field pops up, where you can enter the VIN.
Once that's completed (no need to hit [return] yet) another field with some area codes and engine/frame No ranges will appear below that.

We have one photo of the VIN plate of an Aussie ST1100 compliance or VIN plate (from Alan Williams' ST1100A):
http://www.my-mc-phoenix.com/download/file.php?id=603 In that photo, what dwalby described is labeled "Month/Year".
It sounds as if your bike was made in June, 1990, which is very late for a 1990 model (which is called an L model down under because "1990" does not appear on an Aussie L model the way it does on a Canadian L model).
(However, Allan Bool's Aussie L model ST1100 was built a month later, in 07/90, right at the end of production of all 1990 and L models world wide. His serial number is about 0130.)
How do I know if mine's a L or M as both are in the Vin?
Yours is an L because that is the tenth character in your Vin. The M is in the eleventh. (In terms of Fred D's posted page 8, the L is the "Model Year" whereas the M is the "Plant representation".)
... My 1990 model vin ends in 000027.
Does this mean it's number 27 built?? ... Steve.
The VINs of Aussie L models range from 000002 thru 000156. Yours is the 26th Aussie L model built. But Aussie L models where built late, and so your ST was roughly the seventh or eight thousandth built world wide, among all Pans and ST1100s.
That link is an world overview of all launch models, and Aussie L models are included there. But in this pub, someone is planning to do the same thing at the end of this thread: https://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?143572-Silver-Anniversary-None-of-the-earlieST-North-American-ST1100s-were-silver/page4

Yes, but Kiltman's #65 was built in 02/90 because it is Canadian. One cannot compare Canadian #65 to Aussie #27 to determine which of the two was built first. (Some but not all of the USA '91 models where built in the months 02/90 to 05/90, as discussed in that last link mentioned.)

Yes, thanks Martin, or one can select Honda, then "1990 ST1100" and select Australian, as an alternate way to arrive at that page, which should be important to Steve: http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-st1100-pan-european-1990-australiakph_model4721/partslist/
... What WOULD be interesting to know though is, where is, or who owns, the first 1100 and the last 1100 made for the North American market?
We'll probably never know whose was the first ST1100 built because there were lots built in 02/90 but none built in 01/90, and because one cannot compare Canadian serial numbers to US ones, and because one cannot compare 1990 engine numbers with 1991 ones. But we know there were about 3100 Pans built before that first ST was built. The last NA launch ST built was number 1270 of the 49-state '91 USA type, built in early May, 1990. And we have members whose serial numbers are almost that high. But again, Pan and Aussie L models were built after that #1270; Steve has one or those, and it is an ST.

Steve, some Aussies might like to know the colour of your ST1100:

Silver, or
Black, or possibly
Silver but originally black.

Thanks for looking.
