What's you thoughts on the extended warranty? Going to pick up my new bike and am inclined to get one but not positive about it. Not been a big fan in the past but with the costs or things going through the roof, if I can get the YES at a descent price, may get it.

Just my opinion, but I've always looked at extended warranties as a value-add for the seller. They are betting they never have to make good; you are betting that you have bought something that will require an expensive repair before the extended warranty expires. They would not be so popular with sellers if they ended up costing the dealers money... kinda like Vegas casinos not offering games where the odds are in their favor.

Any actual dealers on the list who can say otherwise, based on experience? I'd love to learn I've been wrong but thus far I've either been right or lucky. Extended warranties would have wasted my money.

Here is a source for the YES.....For those of us here that have a Yamaha sill under warranty. I have been shopping around for a good price on the YES program. D&H Cycles in Alabama has the best price. I talked to Renaa Hopper @ D&H about this and she quoted me a price of 390.00 for a 4 year Yamaha warranty contract. Do the math, that is 97.50 a year for the 4 year extended warranty. I am not an extended warranty guy but with the electronics that the Gen III FJR has, this price is the best I have found, and Electronic problems can be very expensive to trouble shoot and find/repair. Google D&H Yamaha. I am thinking about buying this in a month or two. If you are going to, do it before your warranty runs out. Added note: If you have an ES model FJR the rear shock is in the neighborhood of $2500 bucks. You pay your money and take your chances.

I normally do not buy any extended warranties on any of my vehicles but the amount of miles that I was putting on the bike got me thinking that it may be a good deal as I got it on sale for under 400.00 for four more years with unlimited miles. I have had two sets of fork seals replaced, two clutch switches replaced, one brake switch replaced, headlight bulbs replaced, all coolant hoses and thermostat replaced, secondary master cylinder replaced, and with 128,000 miles on the ST I had the water pump rebuilt with all new seals, coolant, and oil replaced for no extra cost to me. I would say that I got way more then my money worth out of this extended warranty. But like I say this was not something I normally do.

I got it for my st1300 when I bought it new in February of last year. I bought it as I planned on riding it a bunch and expect to have over 100k miles by the time the warranty is up. Probably won't have any issues but I have peace of mind in the event I do. Windshield, electric etc. I'm only at 25k miles to date but have had the water pump replaced already. Not bad for a year and a couple months. The bike sat for 2-3 months though so my mileage is down a bit

Just my 2 cents

Never bought an extended warranty for anything, ever. Always rolled the dice and bought, what I thought to be quality merchandise, and haven't lost yet.

Now I'm cursed for sure...........

Having bought it I'm sure I'll never have a problem but given some of the remote places I wind up in, that's worth the price of admission alone. Most of my other bikes are rarely a few hundred miles from home & thus break downs should they happen are not that big a deal. The ST tho us my long distance touring bike & spends most of its miles several states away. If something were to happen far, far from home its nice to know its covered no matter what the milage is.

I voted NO and saved the money. Or lucked out. With my ST1300, I had until the end of the 36-month period to extend the warranty. Those 3 years showed me how trouble free it had been. Bottom line--I trusted it. I still do

For those that buy it, it is peace of mind for X number of years. For the sellers of extended warranties, it is a big money maker, so, as mentioned earlier, they wouldn't offer it if they weren't sure that the vast majority of dollars collected will never have to be paid out. Obviously, some people DO get benefit from it, but the gamble is, will you be one of the few?

I don't know anything about the Yamaha warranty and what it covers but from car warranty plans they seem to exclude brakes, tires, clutches and suspension. If you are considering the extended warranty because of concern over the rear shock it might be worth checking what the warranty actually covers or more importantly what it does not cover.

Extended warranties are a form of insurance. I have life, home and public liability & loss car/bike insurance because of regulations and/or risk of loss significantly outweigh cost. For everything else I take my chances and long term I'm sure I've saved money. This said, and with the cost of bike parts and labour, $400 or $500 for 4 years of coverage seems like a good balance of cost and potential benefit/future savings. Don't know cost of program in Canada, but I'm sure we get hosed on this vs. US pricing.

I purchased it for my ST and didn't use it once, Good piece of mind I guess. My thought is that the duration and mileage of the original warranty with the bike says a lot about how the manufacturer feels about its durability and dependability. I WILL buy another Honda and I'll save my warranty money next time, lol

I got the 4 year extended warranty for about $250 when I bought my '04. I normally would have passed, but got a killer deal on it. When my rear shocker pre-load adjuster started leaking fluid I didn't even think about the warranty I had purchased. Then while I was at the last WeSTOC in Moscow, ID I was chatting with somebody who had theirs fixed under warranty. And when I say fixed, the whole rear shock was replaced! The adjuster is a non-serviceable item and is replaced as a complete unit. So in my case I was fortunate enough to save a lot of money. I believe the rear shock is $700 - $800.

I bought my st1300 from a dealer and opted to get the extended warranty for the simple fact that it covered the tires as well. The dealer hinted that at any point I can bring the bike with a "nail" in the tires and get new tires. I am going in next week to get michelin road 4 gt's at no cost. Woohoo!!!
So that pays about 80% if the warranty and i get piece of mind for any repairs i might need as well as road side assistance and free towing to a honda dealership. I think it's well worth it.

Yeah went ahead and got it for reasons you guys stated. Love the bike but going to miss the Honda security as you know that they have reliability. Figure may not ever have to use BUT do have the ES system and "just in case" safety of mind.

Got the tire insurance also! Thinking along your lines as I had a big *** screw stuck in my tire and happened to be parked at the dealer when I found it.
