Yeah-right...
Best with a bloody iPhone which hardware and recording-algorithms are sorely limited to the bandwidth of the human voice, so we gonna miss like +70% of the actual sound in the YouTube vid...

Occurrence, duration and volume of "the sound(TM)" is inversely proportional to the fuel-amount inside the tank... ;-)

ST1100Y, you'd be surprised! My sister rode for years never touching front brake as far as stopping, even tho I explained the reasoning. Muscle memory is exactly why I have no use for ABS on a scoot. 50yrs. of riding, with a huge majority of that being sanctioned moto-x, along with yrs. of extreme trail riding and hill climbing, I want TOTAL control of front being seperate from rear of bike. That being said, braking and quick manuvers from muscle memory alone can make a bike do some amazing things in a panic reaction quick situation........if you ALREADY know what to expect in advance. As I'm sure YOU know, total directional control can be done with brakes also.....but only if seperately controlled, and knowing prcisely what amount of pressure to apply and when. Now, no longer 'bullet proof', and takes WAY longer to heal, I ride accordingly avoiding those situations. But, if necessary, not as good as I once was, but bettin' I'm as good once as I ever was if it meant savin' my butt;).
BTW, after my sister FINIALLY attended a riding class, she FINIALLY learned that the FRONT brake IS the main brake. Guess it had to come from an 'official' authority, not here brother:rolleyes:.

Back on subject to Dean's original questioning, when he gets to my place, I'll have a look-see JUST to make sure all is well, and also double check his charging voltage. He's eating up some miles somewhere in 'Toto' land bout now, and I'm sure it's hotter than hades and I'm sure staying hydraded it priority, not any funny noises from bike:D:).

Muscle memory is exactly why I have no use for ABS on a scoot.
Again we've a lot in common... I also never want to doze off into dino-brain laziness, lulled into the false safety of "...I've ABS so nothing can happen..." nonsense...
Rather have respect combined with a good dose of fear about the yet still unknown situation ahead, so I stay focused and alerted...
And having completely separated front/rear brake circuits has a LOT of benefits on a two wheeler...

After a 650 mile ride to Chicago, this noise has not repeated. No idea what it was. It's the reassembled' 99.

Today, with the bike on the center stand, I notice rear brake pad/rotor noise/drag when rotating the wheel. Seems more than the usual slight rubbing sound, but maybe just due to new pads.

I'll just 'go ride'...

Oh, does 13.5 on the voltmeter sound right while under way? I'm used to seeing 14.8 -15 on the 91. This is the first time I've run a voltmeter on the 99.
You may have a sticky rear caliper piston(s). How easy were they to push in when the pads were replaced ?

Thanks! Majority of that comes from issues VERY similar(specially electrical pri./secondary ) on my 34yr. old XS1100 Venturer. These aging STeeds are no different in that respect. Since I've addressed those problomatic areas yrs. ago on the ST, 'knock on wood':rolleyes:, my tottally original charging systems ought to give decades to come of normal service on the ST, AS they were designed to do with NO modifications whatsoever;).
As far as braking systems........just gonna stay with what I'm used to, so no newer bike is ever likely in my future:D:).

Do we all hear interesting noises prior to a trip??
Well, besides the monotone hum of the engine and airflow over the helmet, my imagination goes a bit into bike and parts during a long trip...
Some inner-eye images about hot grease meshed around in wheel bearings, full-synth gear-saver oil flung through the case of the final drive, the hub-dampers compressing and flex over every small bump in the road, streams of mixture-aerosol cycling down the venturies... ;-)

Sure is... thoughts about cherry-red exhaust-valves down there are turning on even more... :lol:
I wonder what pilots think about their rigs on those long, boring trans-ocean routes...

And nary a thought of the girlfriend left at home?

Just de-installed the last one due too high operational costs... (you buy them stuff, yet even a car and their still acting displeased?!... not with me... :evil:)
So their like a hundred reasons why motorcycles are better then GFs...


Back to the tank vent noise, burp, mouse-fart, or however you describe it:
as I already indicated earlier is it connected to the volume of vapour inside the tank; with a full tank, thus tiny gas-bubble nearly no noises will occur as the pressure remains pretty unaffected by temperature changes, whilst with a half-, or nearly empty tank a way larger amount of vapour will react happily with even the smallest changes in temperature...
That's why one might be surprised by a sudden "...UIIEEEEEEP!..." right in the middle of the night, hours, even days after the bike was in operation...

Lol.....I'll be listening for the "...UIIEEEEEEP!...whenever Dean gets here. Haven't heard from him in a few days, so maybe just enjoying the ride, and a few exta stops for :pie1::D.

Quick follow up...
Yep, it appears the noise was/is just the fuel tank groan. Never used to get it. Now more frequently, don't know why.
I just walk away!
