are wheels different between year variants?

hi all,

does anyone know if the wheels (front in particular) are different between the years?

I have an 02 ABS model, and am looking for a spare wheel to make tyre changes easier (and to avoid having to drive the bike wheel to the garage in a car).

so will new model wheels fit?

any help appreciated.

ABSII models (96 and up) take a 120 width tire, all other models (standard and ABSI) take the 110 width tire. IIRC, the ABSII has got 3.5 (?) on the rim and the others have 3.0(?) on the rim. The discs/rotors on the ABSII are smaller than the standard or ABSI. That being said, they will all physically fit because all the bolt patterns are the same. However, because you have a ABSII, you'll need an 96+ ABSII rim to replace it. An ABSI or standard rim would fit, but you would have to swap the discs and go with a 110 width tire. And I don't know if the ABSI sensor ring is positioned for the ABSII 'reader' to work properly and the standard is not tapped for the sensor ring. I am currently running an ABSII rim on my 97 standard with standard discs and it works fine - but I don't need the ABS sensor ring so it is not a problem. Your challenge will be finding an ABSII front rim - it took me a couple of years over on this side of the pond. At one time I had all three of the front rims in my possession and verified the bolt patterns, clearances, etc. on my standard and ABSII ST1100s by installing them just to see (but I didn't road test with the ABSI rim).

Phil's answer applies to ST1100s, which were sold in North America in 2002.

For the 1300, all wheels are mechanically the same as long as you get the right type for your bike (i.e., an ABS bike requires an ABS wheel). North American bikes had black wheels in 2003; all subsequent years had silver. Should be the same situation in the rest of the world.

Yes, the ST1300 was released in the UK and EC in 2002. Concerns about stability and an easily broken off tab on the oil sump prompted recalls and subsequent sump and swing arm pivot change for units across the pond. As a result the ST1300 did not appear for sale in the US until late summer 2002 as a 2003 model which incorporated the noted changes.

I guess we Americans got one extra year of the 1100 in return!

Just checked ebay. Wow! Someone has one listed for $500 and that's without the disk or ABS sensor. Just a bare wheel with used valve stem. Seems like a lot of money.....

Street price for a wheel with bearings installed is about $475 (front or back).

Many of the used rims have bends or breaks in them. Be prepared to have to send it out to a wheel straightening shop before you can use it.

I have a set (front & back, non ABS) that are in that condition, one of these days I'll have to send them off for repairs!
