From the Partzilla exploded view here (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2001/ST1100A+A/FINAL+DRIVEN+GEAR+(2)/parts.html), it's part #13 that failed and sheared the splines from the end of driveshaft on his ST.

Maybe it failed because it wasn't lubed with moly paste, or wasn't lubed periodically at all, and/or the seal problem that you mentioned already. Either way, IMHO :wink: another example why owners should take responsibility for doing most of their own PM maintenance ( and save some $$$ in the process ). It's not difficult to remove the rear drive.
