im trying to get the rear wheel off and am having difficulty with the 8mm end cap on the axle. Is it threaded backwards or did the dealer put it on too tight. Just want to be sure before I start breaking tools or parts.

Try working it both ways until it pops free. Hit it with a little nut buster lube as well. They are tight the first time off. Just my experience.

The axle nut is NOT threaded backwards. I haven't yet come across a left handed thread on my ST1300.

8mm? The nut is 27mm iirc. It usually pops before the other end. If it's rotating hold it with a 8mm hex and slow steady increasing pressure on the 27mm until it moves.
6 sided socket on the 27mm 12 sides tends to round stuff off.

80 lb-ft putting it back on.

I think he's referring to the little bolt that keeps the axle from spinning....8 mm sounds about right..........ff

Take a section of two by four about 12 inches long and stand it on end the rest a breaker bar with an 8mm hex but socket on it. This will act as a second hand and hold it while you use both hands on the 27mm nut.

The hex on the other side of the axel. Sometimes the whole things spins along with the 27mm nut.

What bolt? No "locking" bolt to keep REAR axle from turning. Locking ring, part of large nut.

My 03 doesn't have an "end cap". The rear axle has a flat, sort of rounded head with an 8mm hex (allen) recess in it. That's on the right side. The axle threads are on the left side. Put an 8mm hex wrench in the recess on the right to keep the axle from spinning, then use a 27mm socket on the axle nut on the left side to loosen the axle nut.
