now 06 ST1300A,
Picked up an 06 1300A Sat with just under 14,000

So I decided to change the oil and diff oil. Honda is pretty certain one will not have to add oil often...have to remove 2 panels just to get to the filler

Has anybody ever just drilled a hole through the cover so one could have access the oil fill

No need to drill a hole. Just pop the maint. lid. Its easy. Also, no need to take off any plastic to remove the filter. Use a filter wrench and approach it from the opposite side with a filter wrench. This motor does not lose oil.

Most of us don't touch it at any time other than when changing the oil. I have the 30 seconds it takes to remove the trim to spare while the old oil is draining out.

Never a problem to remove the two small plastic covers to fill the oil back up after draining it, over 140,000 miles on the rig and have never needed to add oil in between changes.

Do not do it! Plastic is expensive and you will ruin the looks of your bike. Also, save yourself some green and use a Purolator PureOne 14612 filter and Rotella Synthetic 15w-40 truck oil. It takes one gallon, exactly, with filter.I have used this combo for 24 years on three STs.
Rear drive oil does not have to be changed but about every 20k miles. I use the synthetic Valvoline stuff. Can't remember the weight.

Rotella does not make 15w40 synthetic oil. 5w40 yes, 15w40 is dino.

Hypoid 80w90 for the final drive.

The biggest problem most of us will every see is replacing the maintenance lid properly so you don't lose it. The plastic rivet must be inserted fully before the locking pin is clicked into place. Every so often a lid comes adrift.
