I'm looking to change the oil on my new to mST1300. Before I posted this I spent hours scouring this new to me forum looking for answers to my questions, as not to be "that guy" No luck, here it goes and forgive me in advance. What is the recommended oil viscosity for the ST1300, what oils do the majority use? Is there a synthetic oil and recommendation? What is the oil quantity? 4 quarts plus a filter? What filter? Thanks

This is from a 2006 owner's manual. In 2007 IIRC Honda changed the primary recommendation to 10w30 with everything else the same. Many owners like to use 15w40 or 5w40 oils. I've used 5w40 synthetic, 10w40 synthetic, 15w40 mineral oil variously over the life of my 2005. It has 156,000 miles on it, burns no oil, and runs like the first mile. Just stay away from oils that are labeled "resource conserving". I always use the OEM Honda filter for a motorcycle or Honda/Acura car. The latter is a little longer, has more filter media and most importantly has the same bypass pressure. These recommendations have worked for me. YMMV and we need a good oil thread now and then.

If you are a Costco member, the Delo (diesel) oil they regularly sell goes on sale at a very reasonable price, and contains 3ea X4 quart bottles, perfect for changing your oil . I use Pure ONE oil filters, 14612 OR 14610. They are consistently rated better than any other filters, and can be had cheaply with Advanced auto coupons. I buy 3 or 4 at a time.

Well here goes ........... Rotella T6 Synthetic , 5W-40 , from WalMart about $21 / gal.
Add in the Purolator L14610 filter. Drain, change filter, add 1 gallon and go ride. The oil level will be between half and full in the window. Never have added oil in my 140,000 miles of ownership with 8,000 between changes.

Thank you all who provided useful information and thanks for taking the time Dave for attaching the manual copies which I don't have access to.

There, if anything, is the best reason to start an oil thread. :)

If you don't have an owner's manual, they're available as a Honda part, or you can download a copy from Honda Australia. There are a few very subtle differences between that bike and the North American model, but most of the information is the same.

Another Rotella T6/Purolator Pl4610 user here. 100,000+ miles without an issue. Probably doesn't really matter what oil you use as long as it is slippery!

Had a dealer friend tell me that they never saw a Honda motor damaged because of an oil failure other than there not being enough. He joked that you could probably fill it with Brylcreme and it would be fine. Afterall it is called the Honda Motor Company.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30. Higher viscosity base oil than Rotella T6. I ran Rotella for a couple of years until I discovered the Mobil 1. The high mileage has no friction modifiers. I also like the feel of the clutch better with the 10W base stock. A little under $27 for 5 quarts at Walmart.

Buy a shop manual, it will pay for itself very quickly. Sometimes you can get them cheap and used on eBay.
Use whatever oil you want that falls in the temperature range in your owners manual as long as it does not say "energy conserving" on the label.
Personally, I use Purolator PureOne 14610 on my Honda and Acura cars and on my Honda MCs, PureOne 14612 along with a fresh belly of Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic every 7-8k miles. One gallon is all you need for a ST1300.

I'l second and third this. Be sure to get the synthetic T6 there are two T6's. I've run the T6 syn and L14610 filter since 400 miles changing at every 10,000 on the bike. Now over 185,000 and running great. The T6 is down to $18 around here.

Rotella T6 with Purolator 14610 every 5000 miles and synthetic 80/90 in rear differential every 10000 miles. I know it could go longer but I like to avoid being confused when oil change is due.

I always change the rear oil at the same time as the engine oil. I use the same filter or a Mobil 1 filter. There is a site that has all this info on it with oil and filter info...Google "thefairchilds.org".

One more Rotella T6 full synthetic and Purolator L14610 filter (in both 1100 and 1300). They're both excellent quality for a very reasonable price.
