Decided to try the Raven on the back of the Black to see what I could get mileage-wise.
I went with the ST13 size as they don't have it in 160/70 and within a week or so of mounting it, I picked up a big industrial staple leaving two holes, an inch apart.
Two plug-patches and a large tube patch over both were used to repair it, but it still wanted to leak slowly, so I added some Berryman's tire sealer I had on hand for my lawnmower.
Handling was pretty good, but at full lean the tire never gave 100% confidence. I always felt a bit of slide there, but it had a good solid feel just a hair off full lean. Lean off a touch and it felt fine, but at peg scraping angles it had an uneasy feeling, though it never stepped out.
Wet grip was good, but not the level of the Mich PR3, a bit better than the 705 uncut, and felt the same as the 705 siped.

This past week it cam off at 8731 miles of use/abuse.
Total cost for what I paid is %0.0117958997per mile
I have seen them on sale for $89 so that price point would have been slightly cheaper per mile than I got from the 705 the last time I ran it, but that tire had a flat that shortened its life.

Next test is the new Avon Storm 3D, that has the mileage warranty if shop installed.
The Two Tone, if it ever gets back on the road (gotta fix a frozen clutch and damage from hitting my truck when I discovered the issue), has a new 705, and an Avon Road Rider Front/Rear.

That's the same model tire I just put on the rear of my bike. Shinko 009 Raven Radial 200/50ZR17. Also put the Shinko 005 Advance Radial 130/70VR18 on the front. I have leaned it over to peg scraping a few times and so far feels like I'm riding on a rail. The tires stick really well, even over tar snakes. Better than I remember any other tire I had on my old ST1100, including the Avon Storm II, and definitely better than the OEM Dunlop tires that came on this bike (which did feel like they would slip some in turns and definitely on tar snakes).

Very interesting that you are having good results with a 200mm rear tire, on the oem 5.5" wheels (I believe). Everything I read says that even a 180 tire should have 6" rims. And because of that,,, I had kind of decided to limit myself to 180 rubber on the rear,,, when I would prefer to go 190 wide. I guess all you can tell is that the 200mm Shinko is working well for you, with no apparent downside ?? thx, Cat'

Sorry, Bob,,, I just noticed that you ride a ctx1300, not the ST. And that new bike may have wider wheel on it ??

I think the 170 is just a bit too wide for the ST11 rim, so it isn't as stable at full lean as it could be.
Agree with the tire being not bothered by tar snakes.

Yes, The CTX1300 comes stock with a 200 rear. It is a very different ride with the wide tire than with the narrower 180. Almost can feel the bike hike up on the side of that wide tire when leaning over. That actually lifts the bike a little (I can see it do that when standing behind while the bike is being leaned over by someone else) so I can lean more than it seems at first before the pegs scrape. More than on my GL1500 that I used to have. Being wider doesn't help on gravel though. BTDT.

Gave up on my 009 Raven rear tire. The front Advance Shinko was nearing the end also but had a few thousand left maybe. Didn't want to trust the 1000+ mile trip to OkieSTOC next week to what was left on the Raven so swapped both out today for Bridgestone Excedra Max tires. Put 8467 miles on the Shinko tires. OK by some standards but WAY LOW for my experience (more used to 15,000+ miles per set on this size of bike). Hoping the Stones last longer.

I have ran two sets of Exedra Bias on my 1100 and consistently get 10-11,000 out of the rear and 12-14,000 on the front. They handle great and love the miles I get out of them!! Ken

I've always read that bias ply tires last longer, but I put radials on my CTX since that what is called for. There are bias tires that fit but I like the performance of the radials on this bike so far (except for the OEM Dunlop tires. Those lasted longer but were terrible performers). The Shinko tires were excellent performers for me and I've read of some riders who get many miles from them. Just not many miles with the set I had compared to what I usually get.
