Dumb *** things... You know how sometimes you get interrupted when you're doing a job on the bike, and when you return to the job you have to try and remember where you got to?

A few years ago I was refitting a rear shock to my wifes VFR750 when I got called in for dinner, but it was too late to carry on when I got free again. So I resumed work on it the following day, but despite a thorough search I just couldn't find the 17mm spanner that I needed to secure the bottom mounting nut anywhere, but located another and finished the job.

About a year later we decided we'd have the shock shortened and took it to a specialist for the work to be done, on collection the owner called me into his office and presented me with my missing 17mm spanner that he found, still attached to the top mounting nut...

I need a reminder of how I gotta watch out for this sort of thing. I hope I'm as lucky when I lose track...

It was big of you to own up for other's benefit. Thanks.

Thanks for following up and letting us know what you found, in spite of the embarrassment. We really all benefit. In addition, my faith in Honda is restored!

reminds me of when I let my 2 year old daughter "help" me with some maintenance job that required removing the front wheel. Couldn't find the caliper mounting bolts upon reassembly, looked everywhere. Finally thought like a 2 year old and got down on all 4 and did a lap around the bike. She had pushed them into the hollow rear axle (it was a sportbike, not the ST)

I did the same thing a few years back. Mine was making a griding noise when I would push the ST back into the garage the caliper was rocking back. Going down the road it was resting on top of the bolt.
