I set out on a Bun Burner Gold ride Saturday morning 4/30/16. I did a SS1000 and a Bun Burner on my 2012 NC700X before I traded it but no LD rides on the 2015 DCT before this attempt. The NC700X gets excellent mileage but the small 3.7 gallon tank limits range at 75-80 mph to 170 miles. For a BBG I wanted fuel legs of 240-250 miles so I experimented with a couple of 2 gallon gas containers made for lawn mowers and power equipment before I found this Acerbis 1.6 gallon fuel tank which gives me 5.0 gallons and a .2 gallon reserve. Actually, it belongs to one of our own here, Tim or playingatwork as we know him, and he was great to lend it to me. I tested it twice before this ride. To fit it I removed the pillion seat and in it's place installed a wooden base for the pony tank. The tank gravity feeds into the stock gas tank. After burning off about 2 gallons in the main tank I open the petcock on the pony and it drains into the lower tank and I see the fuel gauge rise two bars.

The first 870 miles went really well with the bike returning 49 to 53 mpg and my elapsed time average was holding over 68 mph which would be 1500 miles in 22 hours. I had legs up to 240 miles and still had at least .5 gallon remaining at fillups. I was holding 1:50 in the bank until I got caught in stopped traffic on I-75 some 6 miles from a planned gas stop. I waited about 15 minutes while the 94 degree heat and 95% humidity sapped my will. My low fuel light had been on for a few minutes before the traffic stop and I didn't know how long it would take to get moving. Soon enough a couple of guys came by splitting lanes on Suzuki SV650s. It's illegal in Florida to do this but I followed them and split lanes about 5 miles to my exit. I decided to call it quits there with a SS1000 by the time I got home. This was the quickest SS1000 I've done at 16:08. I taped the lower inside of the windshield with 3M Blue to mute glare from the headlight and the top of the frunk compartment to protect the paint from rubbing on the front of my suit.

Congrat's,,,, every big ride is an adventure. If I recall the gps stat's from my ss1000 correctly,,, my typical highway speed was about 120 km/h,, my moving average from start was 92 km/hr,,, and overall average was 85 km/hr. I spent way too much time pumping gas,,, about 2 hours in total, between 12 fuelings. I had a small tank on the cb1000c to begin with,, but contamination reduced it's range further still. I have to say that my butt appreciated the need to stop every 90 minutes anyway !! The ST has far more range,, but I am anticipating 2 hour legs on my next distance ride,, Cat'

Congrats... however, I have no desire to do a SS1000 or a BBG 1500. My body's endurance is not up to it... I get fatigued easily and that makes it dangerous to be riding. The closest I've come is 937 miles in 15 hours... running from the storms.
Be safe!

Nice read Dave. I'll be attempting a BBG on the way out to RockSToc in June. Not my preferred time of year for long distance riding but that's when the opportunity is presenting itself. I've been doing a lot of reading and planning because having done an SS and a BB I've come to realize it's all about the planning.

Congrats! Man, it turned out to be a hot one for a SS1000 + BBG
True. My route was I10 west from Jax to Mobile, AL then back east on I10 to I75 south to Miami via Naples. It was 62 at 0400 and in the 60s and foggy/misty or overcast for about 500 miles. At noon it was 72 degrees but when I rode out from under the cloud cover about when I turned south on I75 the temp rose to the low 90s. Traffic was light on 10 but 75 was packed going south.

Dave & others, what do you guys do for food? When I did my BB I just had snacks and things to eat at stops and while moving. Any other suggestions? If this is a hijack I'll post a new thread. Lemme know.

Great read and pics Dave, thanks.

When you repeat and complete your BBG have you considered reversing the direction and taking the swing south in the wee morning hours with the I-10 out/back at the end of the ride? Just a thought.

I did the I-10 portion first because I'm wary of deer grazing in the median and on the shoulders out that way. I'd just have to run the Bambi gauntlet for about 2 hours heading west to sunrise. If I went south first I'd be on I-10 in the dark for possibly 6 to 7 hours. Possibly irrational but deer scare me. I might try it in reverse next time though.

I took a bag of apples, energy bars, and a few bananas and just eat while riding. I'd get a fruit juice at gas stops if there wasn't a line at the register. It's easy to eat up 10 minutes fooling around in a gas station/convenience store. The NC700's frunk is 26 liters and I had some water in there besides the snacks and it is easy to get into. I was on schedule to take a short meal break off the bike at the gas stop around 6 PM, actually 15 minutes early even with the traffic stopping. Hindsight now. Maybe next time.

Sound logic Dave . . . makes good sense. Looking forward to hearing about your BBG completion when you ride it next time.
