Tube tires and a chain drive.. I would be okay with the chain but tubes suck if you want it for a touring bike. The best bang for your buck in my opinion is the Super Tenere 2014 or newer as you'll get cruise control or the VStrom 650 but the VStrom doesn't have the electrical capacity of the ST or S10 and no CC but both can be had with spoked tubless tires. I don't know much about the crosstourer but the price point has it as very strong competition to the S10.
excuse my ignorance but you keep using the acronym "S10" is that short for the super tenere?

Well after taking all your advice and listening to good advice I went for a test drive on the Yamaha super tenere I found a seat was very uncomfortable and not very inspiring. I was able to test drive and Aprilia caponord. The bike was more fun to ride and had all the features I was looking for except shaft drive. I also found the 2015 Aprilia was on sale for 11700 but I am concerned about dealer Networks otherwise I would buy the bike now. Anyone have any thoughts on The Aprilia?

"You got to pay to play". This is a favorite saying of a friend of mine that favors high performance European two and four wheel vehicles. It's another version of light, fast, cheap.....Pick any two.

In the US there are some KTM dealers that only sell and service KTM dirt bikes which might skew the surmised density of available dealerships if you travel.

Just my humble opinion... If I was going to tour on a bike, it would be logical to pick a brand with a solid reputation and a good dealer network.

That might be the case. But that being said the two KTM dealers near me are primarily dirt bike retailers but both sell and service the 1290 super adventure

My buddy has a 2015 KTM Super Adventure. He loves it. He let me ride it once and I really liked the throttle response, the seat, cruise control etc. He has about 6,000 trouble free miles thus far and he's planning to ride it to ROCKSTOC.

Actually white in color. I am still in limbo with geico the adjuster set damage at $6,380 but I don't have an official yes bike is totaled til claims examiner makes final decision. Then it will be price neg.

I sat on one at the tent in Austin at the MotoGP and really liked the ergonomics for me (6'2, 240 with 34 in. inseam). Would love to ride one but then might get to really wanting one!:D Good Luck and post pics and experience when you get it.

I just looked at a 2015 at my local BMW, Ducati and Triumph dealer. Somebody traded it in with 240 miles on it. And his buddy traded in a 1290 Super Duke. It had about the same miles on it. Too fast for them. They told me they had more dollars than sense. Lol
He traded in the one like yours on a Triumph cruiser. They are asking $16,900 for it. Probably a good thing my knee would not let me ride it! I did not even ask the price for the Super Duke.
