So I pulled the rear wheel off to mount a new tire and the flange bearings were shot! I replaced them once at 25,000 miles with generic bearings and they lasted until 75,000 miles (double the OEM mileage). Well, I call up RPM Cycle and they have a pair in stock so I run up to get them. Much to my surprise, they are a new design! These new spec OEM bearings have a cover for the balls on the non-sealed side of the bearing.

Check it out. . . .

Are they Honda OEM? I ask because the original part number 91052-KZ4-J21 (6905RS) hasn't been superseded in Honda part descriptions. A 6905RS bearing has a rubber seal on only one side.

Well, as far as I know, they are. I gave the dealer (Honda dealer) that same part number (91052-KZ4-J21) and that is what he brought me. They were sealed in a plastic bag with the Honda emblems. The other side had a rubber seal. The side you see in the pics are the "inside" that are meant to be installed facing each other.

I installed them, and the tire, last week and didn't think to keep the packaging or take a pic of it.

Well then nothing has changed. That's how they always have been - open on one side and a rubber seal on the other.

Oh, ok. I have never actually seen new OEM bearings before since the original ones I replaced at 25,000 miles were unrecognizable. So the OEM bearings have always had that little strip of metal that covers the individual balls? I don't think the generic ones that I used last time had that (but I'm going from memory and that was almost five years ago....plus, I really wasn't paying close attention to them back then). ;)

Yes, the cage (or retainer) has always been there--the cage is necessary to keep the balls evenly spaced and is part of every bearing (except unusual types). If you used a double sealed bearing (2RS suffix), the cage would have been hidden (but still is used).
